Ati Manel Octopus in Garlic Sauce

$15.50

“Sauce” isn’t entirely accurate here, it’s garlic and sunflower oil and a pinch of sauce. Perfect to eat straight from the tin, but also great over patatas bravas, or tossed with pasta (oil and garlic and all).

Delicious! It’s definitely more of a simple flavored oil than a sauce, but it’s a stunning tin nonetheless! Nice thick tentacle pieces, a perfect meaty, tender texture, and just enough savory flavor from the garlic. I tried it both plain on a cracker and with a smear of mustard, and both were great. Cemented octopus as one of my favorite seafoods.

Opened this tin to find about 6 long and thick tentacles swimming in oil with pieces of garlic. The oil is sunflower oil, and absorbs the garlic flavor well. The octopus was firm without being chewy. I enjoyed this as a room temperature can over warm pasta. A very simple flavor profile but an enjoyable tin none the less that has me curious to try more tinned octopus.

I love octopus, and this tin did not disappoint. The tin consists of tentacles from smaller octopi, some of which are still joined in pairs, along with oil and a few slices of garlic. My point of comparison is Matiz octopus, and this was not quite as photogenic on opening, with tan to gray tentacles vs purple skinned, white fleshed tentacle chunks. I found it useful to separate the tentacle pairs with a paring knife. I had the octopus on lightly toasted slices of artisanal sourdough from the bakery down the street, drizzled with espinaler sauce and a few drops of lemon juice (perhaps acid overkill, but it was delicious). The roasted garlic flavor was a subtle, yet distinctive addition to the classic octopus flavor – ends of toast slices were dipped in. A fantastic treat.

This was a perfect can of octopus and super accessible for those who have never had it before ( I shared this with my seven-year-old, and she loved it). The ideal mix of firm and tender and great flavor enhances the octopus without overpowering it. Served this over some warm hummus with greens, fried garlic chips, and lemon. Will buy it again.

I opened this can to find two big meaty pieces of octopus, about 3 tentacles each. The texture was chewy, but in a firm way. Not rubbery at all. The octopus would have been great on its own, but for such a mild garlicky flavor, I preferred adding it to a pasta dish.

As stated, this tin is the octopus canned in oil with minced garlic. The flavor was wonderful; I loved how variable the garlic was depending on how I utilized the oil in my meal. The octopus itself is cooked quite well and tender.

I’ve struggled to find a tin of octopus that I really like, and I think this was one of the top contenders thus far! For tinned seafood, octopus tends to be more firm and chewy, but I felt like these had really good texture that wasn’t TOO chewy. I’m usually also not a huge fan of sunflower oil, but aired with the garlic and quality of the octopus, I think it all came together very nicely! I had mine with some crusty buttered bread, but in the future, i think I would try to do a quick pan fry for the octopus to heat them up and really bring out the garlic flavor!
