Ati Manel Sardines in Tomato Sauce

Big Portuguese pilchards. Tomato. Just add bread. Shhh, don’t tell anyone, we once made a grilled cheese stuffed with tomato sardines and dipped it between bites into the sauce in the tin. We might have drooled.

Quite, quite good. Had 5 large-sized sardines in the tin with just a little bit of tomato sauce filling in the gaps. Ordinarily I might wish for more sauce but somehow it really worked in this one … the sauce was light, mild, and very good. It’s not a typical tomato paste sort of sauce – instead it felt like they really tried to make it worthwhile and compliment the fish. They succeeded. The simplicity of this tin really worked and I liked it just as much as the regular Nuri tomato tin (but not as much as the spiced Nuri tomato). The sardine quality is excellent with Ati Manel, they’re beautiful and not a scale to be found. Texturally, a pleasant medium firmness with above average moisture. I ate them directly from the tin and while I might have wanted just a *tiny* bit more salt, it was pretty nicely seasoned.

Ati Manel sardines are super legit and this is no different. This is one of my favorite unspiced tomato tins, short of maybe only Latvian sprats in tomato. If you are looking for just a little bit of mild-but-great tomato sauce to complement your sardines, then look no further. Recommended!

Very comparable to Nuris in tomato sauce! However, I personally find Ati Manel to have generally higher quality sardines than Nuri, and with less heavy-handedness with regards to seasoning.

The sardines were large and plump, with good firmness and moisture. The sardines did not break when picking them out of the tin, and had a beautiful bronze sheen underneath the sauce. The sauce was not very oily, and had a mild tomato flavor–almost too mild for my tastes. The flavor did not penetrate deeply into the sardines, but I’m not super mad about that because of the overall high quality of the fish.

I’m a bit torn as to whether or not I would purchase these again; if the sauce were a bit more forward, I definitely would, but that just wasn’t the case. Either way, I’d say they are worth trying to decide for yourself, especially if you already enjoy Nuri sardines in tomato sauce.
