The terms “spiced” and “spicy” are used pretty much interchangeably in the tinned fish world, to mean two different things: with a hot pepper (or hot pepper flavor), and with cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper. There are many examples of both terms being used to mean both things.

We are so frustrated by how widespread this confusing inconsistent usage is that we’ve gone through our entire product line to correct the incorrect ones such that our description of “spiced” or “spicy” will always indicate which it really is, regardless of the packaging. “Spicy” = with hot pepper flavor. “Spiced” = with the cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper flavors.

In this specific product we consider the bay to be part of the escabeche, and the distinction is intended to specify added heat from the red pepper.

I’d never had mussels in escabeche before, so I built up a lot of (internal) hype for these. For the most part, they did live up to expectations. I whipped up the sauce a little with a whisk, poured it back over the (room temp) mussels in a bowl, grabbed potato chips, and easily scooped up a mussel + sauce with each chip.

The mussels were high quality and an ideal medium-to-large size for putting on a potato chip. Texture was soft & smooth without grit, not chewy at all. The spice level was great, probably a 2 out of 5 on the heat scale and perfectly enough to notice it was there. As a person who usually only eats mussels in cioppino or pasta, this was a very good 4 star (out of 5) first experience in this genre. I could see these really working in other applications, like dips, pastas, soups. Or toast, definitely toast.

All in all, this tin made me both (1) want to try mussels in escabeche again, and (2) want to try other things from Ati Manel. Recommended.

This was my first time trying this company and escabeche. The sauce is tangy, sweet, and savory with a hint of heat. The mussels were supple and delicious. I ate these up with toasted French bread and blue cheese. Highly recommended product.

These were delicious. The mussels had a nice tangy, spicy flavor from the sauce. The texture was pleasant, on the softer side of what I like but no complaints here. Even the chili packed in the tin tasted nice.

For whatever reason the sauce itself didn’t seem to have as much of the tangy/spicy flavor as the mussels. It seemed as though the mussels absorbed most of the flavor.

Full disclosure, I had a cold while eating this tin and it may have muted the flavor a bit. I’ll update this review the next time I have them. I will be ordering more tins.

The mussels are plump and sweet and the subtle spice is nice–the pepperiness of the bay leaves complement the shellfish flavor really well. The sauce is not very strongly vinegary; I almost wish I had a sharper tang to it but the tin eats well with a small squeeze of lemon.

Very good tin of Mussels. I liked the Tanginess. I ate these on some good-quality Crackers. I would buy these again.

This was my first time trying both tinned mussels and escabeche, and they were pretty good – I would rate them at a 7/10 and my husband gave them an 8/10! They had a tangy, sweet, spicy flavor and soft texture that paired very well on some kettle potato chips. They were slightly larger than I expected, but no complaints there, I would just consider eating them with larger, thicker cut potato chips to balance the pairing.

Maybe it was a brave choice, but this tin of mussels was my first foray into tinned fish that wasn’t tuna! Admittedly, mussels are not my favorite seafood, but I’d seen so many positive reviews (and I wanted to eat potato chips), that I decided to start here. With that in mind, these weren’t for me.

At least half of that is that I’ve validated that mussels are not really my thing. However, I do think I got unlucky because the first two I took out of the tin still had beards attached. That doesn’t seem to be consistent with other’s experience, so I wouldn’t let that stop you if you wanted this tin.

Outside of that, I will say I found the sauce to be underwhelming. I was expecting a stronger flavor, but that may also be due to my lack of experience with tinned products.

Anyway, you should buy what looks good to you. My opinion is subjective to me!
