The terms “spiced” and “spicy” are used pretty much interchangeably in the tinned fish world, to mean two different things: with a hot pepper (or hot pepper flavor), and with cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper. There are many examples of both terms being used to mean both things.

We are so frustrated by how widespread this confusing inconsistent usage is that we’ve gone through our entire product line to correct the incorrect ones such that our description of “spiced” or “spicy” will always indicate which it really is, regardless of the packaging. “Spicy” = with hot pepper flavor. “Spiced” = with the cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper flavors.

Super solid, not spicy but a nicely-seasoned medium-sized sardine. Very good quality and I don’t think I saw a single scale in the tin. The moisture/texture balance was great – it’s probably right at a medium firmness and I didn’t even think about adding salt. I’d be hard-pressed to put this anything more than a 2/5 on the spicy scale … I actually didn’t realize it was even supposed to be spicy until I saw one tiiiiny pepper in the bottom (but to be fair, I had just eaten something legitimately spicy right before this).

Pretty impressed by this first try of the Bogar brand. If it was a few dollars cheaper, it could be in daily driver territory but even at this price, it’s something I’ll occasionally throw in for variety. I can always appreciate a tin that works this well on its own without any additions.

This was a really nice tin, had four decently sized pilchards packed in fairly tight. Flavor and texture was of very good quality, nice and firm without any scales. The oil was smooth and did have a mild spice finish on the palate. Had these for a breakfast on sourdough toast and was very enjoyable. That said I’m not sure if it’s worth the premium over a Matiz or AP spicy tin but I would be willing to try it again.
