Bon Appetit Sardines in Hot Sunflower Oil

$3.50

Canning fish in Extra Virgin Olive Oil is a relatively recent phenomenon (and the Italians, who revere the liquid, consider it to be a special form of madness), probably brought about because Whole Foods demanded it and Bela obliged. But most sardine purists prefer a more neutral oil, like sunflower or peanut, so that the flavor of the fish can be fully appreciated. These are about as hot as all of the others, which is to say not very.

These are some of the biggest sardines I’ve seen so far. The can has three massive fish in it. They’re a bit rustic looking, with scraped up skin and visible scales. The sunflower oil is nice because it keeps things a bit lighter and allows the spice and flavor of the sardines to come through more. Because they’re rather big they seem to have a slightly fatty belly that is a bit more noticeable than other fish and contributes some richness and moisture. I’d say if you’re looking for a spiced Portuguese sardine that is affordable and you aren’t too concerned about presentation these would be a solid go to. I just think they need a little doctoring up like some toasted bread to hide the scaly texture.

I thought these were good sardines, but with no aspect that really drives these into a higher tier. The sunflower oil was nice and provided a somewhat nutty flavor and was a nice medium for the hot pepper. The heat was on the mild end, but was pleasant when noticed. The fish were large and moist with a respectable texture. Overall they were a nice sardine and I would certainly eat them again and were certainly good for the price point.

I’ve had this tin and the Bon Appetit with spicy olive oil and I actually enjoy the hot sunflower oil version better! The heat level was more noticeable and the oil had a lighter taste that made the sardine’s flavor more center-stage. This was a nice change of pace from all of the spicy olive oil tins and deserves a spot in the daily driver portion of my pantry.
