Don Gastronom (La Narval) Octopus with Garlic in Sunflower Oil

$15.00

This tinned octopus is excellent straight from the tin with a squeeze of citrus or a vinegary sauce of some kind, or fry them in a saute pan until they just start to golden up and serve with patatas bravas or toss with pasta.

One really great thing about the canning process is that squid and octopus and clams, often tricky for a home cook to get just right when cooked from raw, are always perfectly cooked and only need to be brought up to eating temperature.

Cooked octopus is usually really hard to get right so I was so surprised by how tender and flavorful this octopus was out of the can! These were really great straight out of the can. My go to combination for eating this was a little lemon juice and a cracker. I definitely plan on getting more of this and trying it with some potatoes next time.

Also, I have to say, I really loved the vibrant packaging of this tin. It’s so beautiful in person!

This octopus was very tender and tasted delicious. I was very surprised and how much my 9 year old son enjoyed it. I mostly eat tinned seafood on a cracker and that was how I ate this octopus. When I repurchase, I will likely try it on a salad.

Love the cut of these tentacles, especially since my primary use case is having a quick protein to throw into pasta. Having longer tentacles to bite into rather than coins, to me, is much more fun to eat. I think you could probably do without the oil if you have nicer stuff at home but is totally passable!

Enjoyed as part of a four tin tapas spread with family for a light dinner.

I’ll be honest- I’ve experienced some canned-octopus-based horrors in my life. My parents are devout octopus lovers, having spent a lot of time in Greece where you can find delicious grilled octopus on every street corner, and have been searching for a comparable experience in the form of cheap canned octopus from the grocery store ever since I was a kid. Most cans are bland, slimy and… astronomically chewy. Extremely off-putting. But this can? Oh my. I’m a convert. A surprising amount of octopus in the can, the flesh was firm but wonderfully chewable. And the whole tentacles! Much better than the coins you often find in canned octopus. We pulled these out of the oil they come in and put them atop some mixed greens for presentation with a bit of salt, pepper, olive oil and lemon juice. Delicious. Will be reordering at some point.

Excellent firm texture while still being tender. Worked really well in a salad dressed with simple oil and vinegars. Girlfriend who didn’t think she would like it was pleasantly surprised. Great tin.

Large whole tentacles with suckers, which are impressive looking…in a clean oil…some tiny pieces of garlic at the bottom of the tin.
The flesh has a great chew and is mild, tasty and perfectly done. The oil itself is neutral…perhaps too much so.
The garlic here doesn’t make itself known, especially for a garlic head like myself, but the salt level is well done. Fresh squeezed lemon definitely gave this some life.
Overall I kept looking for more. I think this needs to be part of a Sautee’, which for myself would include fresh garlic for sure, shallots, onion, and whatever else was hiding in the fridge…dumped over some buttered egg noodles…
While the price at RTG is reasonable, there is not enough here for me, to prompt another purchase.

Wow… this was delicious! I ate this almost immediately upon receiving my package. I just ran it under hot water for 5 ish minutes and ate it straight from the can. Like everyone has been saying the whole tentacles make this a cool eating experience, and the octopus itself is so tender and perfectly cooked. The garlic isn’t *super* prominent, but I honestly didn’t mind the sunflower oil… it had a nutty-ish, albeit subtle, taste and I think it paired well with the meatiness of the octopus. I also added some lemon juice because in my opinion lemon and seafood are a perfect pair and it added some extra zhuzh. I’ll definitely be buying this again

I typically don’t like tins that use sunflower oil but wow, so good! The subtle flavor the oil brings paired so well with the pulpo. Texture was great, not too chewy buy a good bite to it. I paired this with sliced tomatoes, pickled purple onion, and some bright green olives. This is a great little appetizer plate and so impressed with this pulpo!

On opening the tin, I see that there are many small tentacles, some connected to each other at the base. Color is tan to white to pinkish. I had these on toasted sourdough with oil from the tin and espinaler. Unfortunately the flavor was bland. These were insufficiently salted, and the sauce didn’t make up for that. The oil was quite neutral with only the faintest hint of garlic flavor. The texture was good, but this is my least favorite octopus tin so far. I’ll go back to Matiz and Ati Manel in the future.

Whole tenacles, with suckers!…packed tightly in the tin…in a clean almost clear oil…thin slivers of garlic on the bottom…
Very firm flesh with a pronounced chew…but it’s not rubbery…I get a very mild garlic from the oil…the octopus itself is mild, richly sweet and has a roasted sort of quality to it…you get a nice balanced hit of salt…Very Tasty…
Gave it a squeeze of fresh lemon and this made everything pop…I ate this straight out of the tin with some Cracked Pepper & Olive Oil Triscuit’s

I had this tin as part of a fishmas seacuterie spread with family, including several newbies. My sister’s kid absolutely loves octopus but has never had it tinned before. They were so excited for the whole tentacles and would’ve eaten the whole tin by themselves if we’d let them. Texture wasn’t too rubbery but still had that tough octopus feel. I didn’t pick up on the garlic, but it was definitely good flavor. I personally don’t like octopus enough to really enjoy this tin straight up (except the really small tentacles), but I think it would have been good chopped up into a pasta. Going forward, for myself, I’ll probably stick to octopus chunks in a more robust sauce. But since the octopus lover of the group really enjoyed it, I can confidently recommend this tin to other octopus lovers.

We found this fairly bland straight out of the tin. Instead we decided to follow the recipe provided in the QR that came with the tin. Involved cooking the octopus in some garlic with Meyer lemon peel in a chili oil. We found the flavor wonderful and much preferred!

I’m a fan of tinned octopus, and after checking out the reviews, I was eager to give this one a shot. Popped open the tin, and the aroma was promisingly delicious. The presentation was top-notch – thick tentacles and the tin was packed to the brim. Excitedly, I even sent my partner an octopus mukbang gif to express my excitement. But reality hit when I took the first bite, and, well, nope. Tried a few pieces, around 4, and it just wasn’t working for me. The flavor was inexplicably bad; I can’t put my finger on it, but it was so unappealing that I had to give up and toss it. A major letdown. I then had to backtrack on the gif I sent…. lol.

Mild garlic flavor in the oil, great texture in the octopus. I fried it up in a pan and put it on toast, which tasted excellent.
