3.5 stars, solid but can’t round up to 4 because … something … about the ink sauce was missing, lacking. Warmed it up a bit and ate it over rice, which I don’t typically do. I was expecting to be blown away. But -and I hesitate to admit this- I kinda found myself thinking about how Goya Squid in Ink was at least equal, if not better than this tin for a few bucks less. The overall quality was there and perhaps it was just an off day for the squid-tasting part of my brain, but I think I’ll try a different Don Gastronom next time I want to add something unique to my order.

This was a really great tin with some subtlety in flavor. Mixed the whole contents with some cauliflower rice and some furikake. Wow.

When you open this tin, the smell announces itself to the world. Had it over warm rice but the sauce wasn’t enough to hold its own. I added chili crisp and it was delicious. I will probably try a different squid next, just to have something to compare this to.

I really enjoyed this can. Great flavor to the sauce and the squid had a great texture. I had a few pieces straight from the tin, which were delicious and savory, but I used most of it to toss with pasta that was cooked with garlic, jalapeno, lemon, butter and parsley (added the squid at the end just enough to warm it, but not cook it any further). It made for an excellent lunch. Delicious product and worth the price. If you haven’t had tinned squid, this would be an easy and excellent introduction.

I’m a perennial fan of using squid in ink in pasta – I make a sauce with butter and garlic, and maybe some white wine, make sure some vegetables get coated in it, and add the can with ink and some lemon juice at the very end, mixing it thoroughly.

This can went great in that dish. The squid has a nice flavor and texture, and has nice large pieces compared to the Goya I’m more used to. The ink is a little weaker than I’d like it to be, but it still does its job well.

Overall, this is a very solid can, and it’s definitely worth the money you pay for it.

I made a delicious squid ink pasta with this can! Sizzled some garlic in oil, added the can and its contents along with a tbsp of tomato paste and some sliced cherry tomatoes. Cooked some linguini and tossed it all together.

I might want to modify that recipe a bit, but overall the dish was great and the squid worked perfectly.

I also was sure to try one straight out of the can, as always, and they were definitely delicious on their own!

I first tried this can several months ago heated up and served over some fried potatoes. It was one of the best canned fish experiences I’ve had. I reordered four tins. I recently tried it again paired with some leftover risotto and it was as good as ever. Excellent value. Highly recommend.

    A 5 out of 5 for me.

I’ll start by saying that I grew up eating squid cooked in it’s own ink seasoned in garlic and tomatoes and spices. This tin was my first foray into trying a conservas version of squid in ink and was happy I started with the Don Gastronom as it brings back memories of eating that squid dish from my youth.

Warmed the tin and served over some oven roasted potatoes. In the tin were tightly packed squid pieces covered in black ink and I also noticed the orange-ish oily hue which I figured was imparted from tomatoes and maybe paprika as a seasoning. On it’s own, the squid has the umami essence. The seasoning is mellow in a good way since there is no one flavor that overpowers the rest yet somehow the seasonings used work well together. The squid consistency is pleasant — now chewy or tough at all. This is one that I will order again for future boxes to keep in stock in my pantry.

Wasn’t a huge fan of this unfortunately. The squid ink sauce had a consistency similar to a mole and sat in some peppered oil. Very strong after taste that’d you might expect from a cheaper tin but the forward flavor itself was fine. I’d reckon Don Gastronom has better cans but if you must have squid, these are passable.

Pieces of squid of varying size…most are around nickel size…no tentacles…there is a thick sauce of ink and red oil…even the ink is thick…
The flesh has a great chew…just right…the sauce is delicious!…rich tomato flavor with a hint of paprika…onion and seasonings…deep Unami…excellent!…
This was a really good tin…an excellent buy at RTG’s price of $5.50…will purchase again
Had with Club Crackers and Jake & Amos Pickled Okra

I was a bit let down by this tin. The squid was great, not too chewy and had a great subtle sea flavor. I was a bit disappointed by the ink sauce, found it more bland than I expected. I added this tin to some rice with chili oil, scallions, and pickled radish and that definitely made it more flavorful and rounded out. I could see this being good for pasta as well. However, for the price it was, a good deal and a fun way to try new things. I think this makes a good starter tin for people trying squid, as the quality of the squid in this tin was great

This is the first time I’ve tried canned squid. I was put off when opening the can because I couldn’t really tell what was going on in there. The contents were dark and chunky. I thought the thick dark parts were tomato but it seemed to be the ink.

I ate this over a cheap packet of garlic and oil noodles with some grilled mushrooms. The larger pieces of squid had the texture and taste of mussels in my opinion, but I’m not complaining because I love mussels. The smaller pieces were more consistent with the texture of squid that I am familiar with. The spices made my meal very flavorful.

I’m not sure I would eat it straight out of the can because the thick ink was odd to me. Overall, I thought this can was good, especially as part of a meal, but will probably try other brands before getting Don Gastronom squid pieces in ink again to see if I like a different brand more.
