I bought this tin mostly because I was buying the espinaler sauce and figured I should try their sardines as well.

All in all, these a great sardines with a really mild flavor, almost not enough flavor, Could have done with a little more salt though the olive oil was some of the best I have experienced in tinned seafood so far. It had a really nice vegetal flavor without being too bitter.

As I ate them with chopsticks, they had a tendency to fall apart in to smaller pieces. They didn’t absolutely disintegrate, just a few smaller pieces though some held their shape. Despite that, they still weren’t mushy and had a good bite/chew which was surprising given their fall-aparty-ness.

I can see myself getting these again but I wasn’t blown away and am not sure if I can consider these worth the price. They are right on the edge for me, if they were a buck or two cheaper then that would be a completely different story.

A delicate small pilchard. The top layer in particular has some of the smallest sardines I’ve come across–very delicate, thin, and with tails attached–and they get larger, though by no means large, toward the bottom of the tin. The taste is clean up front, pleasantly savory, with an almost butter-like oiliness. Very tasty. The texture is likewise on the oily side. A lovely fish that doesn’t quite jump to the top of the heap, but one I’m glad to have tried, especially with the cayenne version of the Espinaler sauce, dowsed liberally on good saltines.

These were firm little fellas, they held up well to being handled, had a mild but meaty bite and the spines had enough integrity to add some noticeable texture. Silver bellies invite you in upon opening and the experience is good until the last bite. Highly recommended, eat as is or with hot sauce.

Our tin contained 14 very nicely packed, pretty sardines. The texture is right where it should be firm but tender. The sardines were slightly stronger flavored than other small sardines we’ve had. The oil and light and neutral. A very solid choice. If you are small sardine person, you should definitely give them a try.

Is there such a thing as Meh+? There was nothing wrong with this tin, but nothing outstanding, either. The fish were fresh, the oil ditto, but the texture was ever so slightly mushy. And there wasn’t all that much…taste. Break out the condiments for these. So yeah: Meh+ for the meal, maybe straight Meh at this price.
