Espinaler has a well-deserved reputation for great tinned seafood, so I had very high hopes for this tin. Sadly, I was disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, it was great, particularly at this price point, but it did not blow me away the way I thought it might. Very nice aroma from the escabeche. Odd variation of sizes in the mussels, though all tasted very good, none of them chalky which is a common problem. Would definitely buy again. I’ve got a tin of their “Premium” mussels, about 3X the price, next in the queue, so let’s see how these compare to those.

Very unique escabeche flavor that I’ve not really experienced before, quite different from Ramón Peña for example. It was bright and acidic, yet I’m not sure I’d say tangy? I liked the spicy version of this tin quite a bit but this one, mostly ended up feeling confused. Was it due to a super-powerful vinegar? Unsure. For me, this is a tin that I wouldn’t recommend to eat on its own but I found a pleasant pairing with some mini-toasts and flaky salt. Texture was excellent, that’s for sure … no chalk, no chewy bits. While this isn’t necessarily the version of escabeche that I prefer, the quality of the mussels alone make it worthwhile to try.
