Fangst Danish Freshwater Trout (Regnbue Ørred) Smoked, with Juniper and Lemon Thyme

$12.00

In his childhood, Martin co-founder of FANGST, enjoyed his many visits on trout farms with his father, a biologist dedicated to developing world-class farming of trout in Danish freshwater. In this can, we have preserved a bit of that memory – and some delicious tinned smoked trout with juniper and lemon thyme.

Absolutely beautiful trout. The texture has not been compromised even a little bit. Firm, flaky but, not tough. Superb flavor.

This is my first canned trout and it is truly immaculate. The texture is perfectly tender and flaky and not dry. The juniper really shines through for a unique, yet familiar accent. The filets look beautifully pink and striated. There is an ideal level of smoke flavor that doesn’t overpower the other seasonings at play. I found myself picking out the smallest of pieces to prolong savoring the flavors. It was like fish candy. If I could eat this every day I would. As a word of caution I would not recommend serving this on something warm, it seemed to be a detriment to the texture.

This is my second Fangst product and I am unsure as to which I like more, as far as tinned trout goes this is on the firm side with a bold flavor, I didn’t really get the juniper and thyme flavors individually but combined with the fish and smoke it make for a delicious bite, I’m wondering if they hot smoked it before tinning to achieve that texture, I served it on some crusty bread with sliced figs and its own oil, fantastic, this will be in my regular rotation now.

everything i’ve tried from fangst is top notch and this trout is no exception. the oil is so delicious! this might just be me but i find that the thyme aroma reminds me of roast chicken.

Hands down, this tin was the favorite of my order. I was shocked at how delicious it was and disappointed I hadn’t tried it before. I have added it to my list of must have pantry staples. It is a bit of a splurge; but some things are simply worth it!

I tried this tin… three weeks ago now, I think? and I can’t stop thinking about it. I ate it in an autumn salad with in-season veg and dried fruit; used the oil to shake up a little honey vinaigrette. The fish was the perfect texture – semi-firm, flaking beautifully. This is a great trout for someone who’s newer to tinned fish, but I think also great for someone who wants to try new flavors!
I definitely need to reorder this, because I want to eat it on a slice of crusty bread now!!

Oh my god, this was good. We ate them straight out of the tin. The trout itself was so flavorful… the juniper and thyme were perfect accompaniments without being overwhelming. This would be a great intro tin for someone interested in trying tinned fish, but not quite sure where to start. It was fresh, light, and upon reflection, wonderfully versatile in that it could be enjoyed many, many ways. Next time I’ll be copying some previous reviewers’ ideas… they all sound too delicious to pass up.

Absolutely amazing! Juniper and thyme appears just slightly with pronounced flavor that isn’t overwhelming. I’ve never had canned trout before and regret waiting this long! Buy this tin. You won’t regret it whether you are eating it alone, with crackers, or accompanying a pasta/salad.

Cracked open this tin today for lunch, beautifully intact pinkish white trout filet inside. Open opening the aroma of smokiness and herbs was immediately apparent with almost no fishy smell as far as tins go. Served with some herbal crackers.

The texture of this tin was smooth and buttery and was not too firm or soft and what I enjoyed the most about this tin. While you can absolutely taste the juniper and thyme, I found the saltiness of the tin to be overpowering to those flavors and I feel it ended up putting the taste out of balance. I am wondering if it was just my tin as no other reviewers mentioned the salt level. I will likely try this tin again to see if the saltiness was an anomalies because the other taste profiles and texture was awesome.

Wow! What a marvelous can of trout! Great appearance in the tin, the pretty pinkish hue of the fish, with a little bit of the juniper and lemon thyme on top of the filet, it’s a very appealing piece of fish. The texture itself is firm, but still flakes apart easily, very easy to take apart piece by piece with some chopsticks.

The herbal flavors are brightened by the lemon thyme. There’s also a really nice balance between the smoke flavor along with the herbs/juniper, that also don’t overpower the mellow vibe of the trout itself. And the remaining oil is downright drinkable (we seriously sipped every drop of the oil). We ate these with simple crackers, and I wouldn’t add any flavoring like sauces as it really doesn’t need it. Because I saw it mentioned in one other review, I’ll say that I didn’t find it to be too salty at all, you can taste that there’s salt, but it didn’t feel “salty,” I found it less salty than most commercially available smoked salmon-type products.

The only other canned trout I’ve had was the Cole’s trout with lemon and cracked pepper (also amazing), and while this was a very different product (Cole’s Trout is extremely soft/tender where this is firm and flaky as well as also being a lot stronger flavor wise) I would say it’s similar in quality. $11.50 isn’t cheap by any means, but I would definitely get this can again as a tasty stand-alone lunch treat.

Can’t get enough of these! We got 8 tins, mixed them with crème fraîche, herbs, and lemon to make a trout salad, and served them on fresh baguette with cucumber salad at Christmas for an appetizer. Good straight out of the tin too, but mixing up a salad and pairing it with pickles makes the perfect bite!!

  12. Timothy Geers (verified owner)

This is my current favorite tin of all time. As others have mentioned, the texture is superb, the lemon thyme flavor subtle but sublime, and the smoke is just right. It was perfectly salted in my opinion. I just dumped the whole can over white rice with a little franks red hot and a couple turns of black pepper. Perfect easy lunch.

  13. Jacob Rosch (verified owner)

A great can! I was worried the smoky flavor would be dominant, but it’s really well balanced. The fish texture is excellent as well. Would highly recommend!

  14. Fisheye (verified owner)

Pretty solid example of smoked trout. Texture is not as firm as Trader Joe’s, and definitely firmer than Cole’s. It’s a good balance – flaky and toothsome but not too dry.

The juniper, thyme, and smoke flavors are balanced and subtle. None of it overwhelms the delicate taste of trout. It’s a little salty to eat straight but would be a delight in a salad or on a good baguette with some tomatoes and onions.

What an enjoyable tin of smoked trout. I opened up the can and was greeted with loosely packed smoked trout covered in a golden colored oil with some bits of juniper. While I did notice the smoked preparation of the fish, I can say that the smoke smell wasn’t overpowering. The juniper and lemon thyme added just the right touch of flavor to complement the smoked trout. I ate this with a side salad of potatoes/peas/olive oil and lemon dressing. Will definitely get a few more cans next time I place an order with RTG.

First time trying tinned trout and it won’t be my last. This tin was very smoky and delicious without tasting fishy at all. I enjoyed this on a piece of sourdough toast and I can’t wait to order it again to try it different ways.

  17. Molly (verified owner)

WOW. Totally blown away by this. The texture is incredible — meaty and hearty without being tough or overly lean, with nice big filets that flaked into big chunks but didn’t disintegrate. The oil is luxurious and not overwhelming, just enough left in the bottom of the can to drizzle on top of the fish and some warm rice. The flavors are immaculate and the combination of the herbaceous juniper, bright lemon thyme, deep rich smoke, and rich fish is absolutely delicious. My only critique, if I really search for one, is that it’s a bit salty, but that works perfectly over rice or toast or in pasta. Worth every penny. I can’t wait to buy more.

I had this tin over rice noodles and really enjoyed it. The only other tinned trout I’ve had previous to this was Fishwife (gems and regular), which I thought was delicious… But this Fangst trout tin is even better. The portion is generous and the texture is buttery and flaky. The herbs were all in a single pile on top of the fish, so I had to do some of my own mixing to distribute them evenly but I didn’t mind this as I also wanted to flake the fish up into smaller, easier to eat bites.

The flavor of the fish was mild and I have never had these seasonings before, so I was expecting it to be quite strong, but for myself, I am not sure if I tasted them particularly strongly… It was enjoyable to eat though and tasted nice so perhaps this is a sign of the flavors being well balanced and well matched.

The tin overall feels like quality from the elegant box, the golden tin, the presentation and taste of the fish… I’m excited to try other offerings from Fangst and I will definitely eat this one again.

Now this was a tin that exceeded my wildest expectations, and opened my mind to the beautiful balance and depth of flavor that is possible to achieve in tinned fish. The trout itself, the smoke flavor, the juniper, the lemon thyme… all of these flavors marry together so beautifully to create something infinitely more special than the sum of their parts, a fabulous melody of flavor imparted into the most wonderfully tender, flaky fillet of fish. This tin was an absolute treat to eat and I will definitely be purchasing it again in the future.

This can was a delight. After cracking it open, we were greeted by an enticing smokey aroma and none of the “fishy” smell you can sometimes get when opening a tin. The fillets were nicely organized and medium firm in texture. They held together well after taking out of the can. The flesh was moist and reminded me more of fresh fish than any tinned product I’ve had.

We had this on toasted and buttered rye bread. The juniper and thyme flavors were there, but more in the background than I expected, which was nice as the flavor of the fish and smoke was so good. This will definitely be a regular in the rotation!

my first trying trout, tinned or otherwise, and i would like to say that i was pleasantly impressed by this tin. it’s a tender fish in a good quality oil, and the flavor of the smoked flavor and thyme was great, i did personally experience some fishy taste but i personally liked the fishy flavor. i ate an olive and tomato salad and it was delicious. all and all it was a great tin and i will be getting more of this tin

  22. Shana Leshko (verified owner)

This is an absolute show-stopper. Lovely trout flavor, balanced with the aromatics. I ate this straight from the tin, but would be incredible on some toasty sourdough. Will re-buy over and over (even for the price!)

  23. Stacy Rosenfeld (verified owner)

Another gorgeous tin from Fangst! Upon opening, you can see gorgeous fillets with herbs on top. It’s sitting in a beautiful golden oil. The trout is meaty and flaky and tender. I added a generous squeeze of lemon juice into the tin. I enjoyed this tin with cottage cheese, pickled onions and radish, chili crunch and ritz crackers. This tin IS pricy but absolutely worth it.

  24. marshallprather (verified owner)

Quality over everything with Fagnst. Nice smoky flavor, quality fish that wasn’t overly pungent – easy entry level. Enjoyed this over bread and crackers with crème fraîche, Calabrian chili butter and along side assorted other nibbles.

I had this tin as part of a fishmas seacuterie spread with family, including several newbies. It was also a tin that Dan picked for me and it was a great pick. I’ve had tinned trout before and especially like the Cole’s rainbow trout I buy locally. This tin was really good too and everyone enjoyed it. Just as tender and delicious as the Cole’s but a bit saltier. It is also almost twice the price of what I get Cole’s for locally and not a significant improvement so I probably won’t order it again but I would absolutely eat it again given the opportunity. If you like trout, you’ll love this.

One of the best things I’ve eaten out of a can. Beautiful, tender fillets of trout with a clean, smoky flavor. Not a hint of fishiness – you could hardly tell this wasn’t fresh fish. The fillets hold together well and have a velvety texture. The lemon thyme and juniper contributes a subtle aromatic quality. A fantastic splurge for special occasions.

Incredible product. Had it just with buttered toast. It’s like you went to a restaurant and ordered a fancy trout meal and got it canned – it’s so firm and, I dunno, entree-ish? It would be excellent on a plate alone with a side dish. A little salty with a smoke that reminds me of pipe tobacco smoke, and subtle herby notes. I don’t get any juniper, but my wife tasted it and did. Like I said, very firm and flaky texture that I would have never guessed was canned. A little salty for my taste, but I think using in a dish with heavier creamier elements would round that out.

My favorite Fangst tin and one of my top tins of all time. Firm, flaky, rich, smoky, complex, delicate. I’ve never met a tin of smoked trout I haven’t liked, but this one is especially fine. One of my few regular tins over the $10 mark.

  29. JoshuaTheFoodie (verified owner)

Firm, beautiful trout, with the perfect, light smokiness. The juniper is an excellent nordic touch and makes me want to grab some pickled herring to enjoy it with. Excellent with toasted, buttered sourdough bread and some red pickled onions and caperberries.

  30. LA (verified owner)

What a delight. Firm, fresh, lightly anointed with complementary flavors; just enough smokiness to call for a hearty rye or peasant bread. Much as I adore sharp mustard & tangy pickles, I’d go easy on accompaniments that might mask the nuances of this offering. An Alsatian riesling is a fine partner. Share with someone simpatico. (This could be you.)

This is one of the best tinned trout cans I have ever had. Beautiful firm fish and flavors marry together to create one of my favorite flavor combinations in tinned fish. This and some fresh bread is heaven.

  32. Doug Westney (verified owner)

Beautiful trout with a nice smoky flavor. A hint of juniper. If you are fortunate to have fresh trout in your area and prepare it in the same manner, you can almost get the same taste, but not as good as this tin. This Fangst tin is well worth the price.

  33. Jad Said (verified owner)

I am not much of a freshwater fish eater but this tin really surprised me at how refreshing this trout tasted. The lemon thyme gave the fish a delightfully bright flavor and I’m definitely getting this again!
