Fangst Sprat no. 2 (Smoked) Baltic Sea

$9.50

Baltic Sea sprat – lightly smoked. In cold pressed rapeseed oil.

’Brisling’ is a small fish that traditionally was landed in great numbers along the Scandinavian and Baltic coastlines. Here it was prepared by hand and preserved in cans to be sold as a Nordic version of sardine.

The brisling from FANGST is our contribution to revive and create a new place for this fine fish as the ‘Nordic sardine’.

Ranked #38 on the worldbestfish.com Overall list, and #9 on the Sardine list.

I received these this past week as a gift from Dan. I like just about anything that lives in the sea, specifically sprats.

The way these were shipped was actually pretty nice, the packaging was fairly robust and was a higher quality than what I expected.

The product I received looked identical to the photos on this page. Very pretty.

The fish had a fantastic flavor and a perfect texture. The oil was not very rich like olive oil. The smoky flavor wasn’t intense, it was about the same as other smoked fish that don’t use liquid smoke. There seemed to be a generous amount of salt but it wasn’t too salty.

I typically enjoy dines with some red onion and hot sauce on crispbread, but for these they were so good I just ate them by themselves.

I highly recommend these to anyone who enjoys sprats.

These feel very cozy. Like you’re warming up under a knit blanket next to a wood stove. Each one is golden brown and packed with smoke and salt flavor. They’re very soft, but not mushy. They still maintain structural integrity when plucked from the can with chopsticks. The oil is light and has some of the smoke that the fishies themselves are infused with. Next time I try these will definitely be on a bagel with cream cheese, onions and maybe capers. Bonus points for having a lid that peels back clean and easily.

My very first order, I purchased two tins to try, and once my son and had them, we were instantly hooked. These are now a must every time we place an order! Just the appearance alone when opening a tin brings warmth. The careful, beautifully packed sprats, with their shimmering silver, underneath the golden hue of the oil almost makes you feel guilty to dig in. But once you do, all the amazing flavors with the perfect smokiness, makes any guilt quickly go away.

4 stars all day. Fangst quality is there just like you knew it would be. Smoke is pretty light, can’t compete with the heavier-smoked sprats like Riga Gold or Belveder. Fish was perfectly firm and not dry in any way. Oil was light and didn’t add much of anything other than moisture.

Mostly … I … I’m just not sure why they exist? The Fangst no. 1 tin is also lightly smoked, but adds heather and chamomile for depth of flavor. The complexity of that one (at least as I remember it) was significantly more than this one. Is this tin exclusively for people who don’t like the hint of heather & chamomile?? Don’t get me wrong, this is great. Maybe I’d even make it a 4.5 star tin if Dan allowed partial stars here.

If you love Fangst quality and a little bit of smoke, get the no. 1 tin with heather & chamomile instead. If you love lots of smoke flavor and don’t mind that the fish is softer & slightly lower in quality, get Riga Gold or Belveder. Bottom line: Just because I’m so confused that this product exists doesn’t change the fact that these are very, very good.

These were probably the most beautiful fish I have seen in a can before. They were packed neatly and the skin was unblemished and untouched, the smoky yellow/brown color and shine almost giving off the impression of small sardines wrapped in gold leaf.

Now onto taste, these were a bit too smoky for my preferences. The texture was great and none of the sardines fell apart in going from the can to my mouth. The smoke flavor was just a bit overwhelming.

While I liked these, I think I prefer the Fangst No. 1 more and given they are the same price, I don’t see myself every getting these again unless I become more accustomed to the smokiness over time. They were gosh dang beautiful though!

Fangst sardines are a rare pleasure in life, and this tin is no different. I think the most impressive thing about Fangst tins, for me, is how pristine the fish look in the tin. Perfect, shimmery, brown/gold skin. Excellent smell and light, but present, smoke. The flavor is very clean. All sardine with a hint of smoke. Normally, I love a heavily smoked fish. But I appreciate that the smoke doesn’t overpower these clearly amazing quality fish. In a lesser quality fish, I might be disappointed at the lack of heavy smoke flavor or extra seasonings. But these are pretty close to perfect. I absolutely loved them.

I find it hard to believe these are only #38 on the overall 101 list. This is an incredible tin! Presentation is a 10 and the flavor is great. Perfect little sprats with an incredible smokey flavor and the perfect amount of salt. This might be my new favorite.

Up to this point, my only tinned fish experience was with canned tuna. I ordered a variety of tins from Rainbow Tomatoes Garden. They all arrived quickly and came individually wrapped and well-packaged.

To be honest, I had a little trouble eating this tin (this surprised me, because I have always really enjoyed seafood). I think I had a bit of a mind-block since most fish that I have eaten doesn’t actually look like fish. It was a little new to me and was something that I had to get over at first. To my surprise, my husband (who has never been a seafood fan) really enjoyed this tin and especially appreciated the smokey flavor.
We tried it with toasted sourdough and on kettle-cooked potato chips.

I give this can a 4.0 stars out of 5 stars. In the can were neatly packed bristlings submerged in golden colored oil as well as a noticeable whiff of smokiness. The delicate soft texture of the sprats is present. The flavor of the fish was enjoyable and I would say that these have a more subtle smokiness when compared to the Riga Gold. It’s all a matter of preference but for me, the Fangst with chamomile and heather is a more memorable tin compared to this one. I am taking off 1 star just because I was expecting a bit more given the hype… however my assessment is that this tin is good but I’m not sure that it’s THAT good.

This is a fantastic tin. The amount of smoked flavor was just perfect for my preference. These taste beautifully fresh, and the texture is perfectly firm yet tender. I have been slowly acclimating myself to the experience of bone-in tinned fish, and I can confidently say it was this tin that finally allowed my brain to disregard the presence of the bones entirely and immerse myself in the experience of enjoying these sardines for what they are – a true treat, a lovely little delicacy in a tin.

I don’t know what I can add to a tin of sprats with as much pedigree as these already have. I ate these on saltines with pickled onion and an herbed cheese spread, after trying a lone fish which was perfect by itself. Absolutely phenomenal. These have the most amazing texture, and the seasoning is spot on. They are soft, yet do not yield to being handled. I’m not a high roller by any means, but I would make the effort to get at least one can of these in every order. My suggestion is just dump some pickled onions into the tin and eat them as is.

There’s no simpler way to describe these sardines: You get that for what you pay. And with this tin you get a lot. The texture of the fish is extraordinarily tender with a consistent melt-on-your-tongue quality throughout. There’s minimal bone, scale or other elements to interfere with the experience as there sometimes can be with lesser tins. The smoke is subtle and does not overpower the fish. The rape seed oil is of a similar character — it does its job without intrusion. I enjoyed these fish plain, but the options are numerous. This is the tin that’s I’d share with others who are conservas-curious.

Fangst has earned a reputation for their high quality fish, and these certainly did not disappoint. A high-quality smoked sprat, perfect for serving on crackers. The smoke flavor on these is very classic and incredibly well-executed. I will say that given how much hype these have gotten, I was expecting them to absolutely blow my mind. While my mind was not necessarily blown, I was very satisfied with this tin and would definitely recommend.

My favorite tin of fangst to date. Amazing flavor.
The fish are quite soft, but not in an off putting way. It’s just this brands style.
    Incredible flavor and seasoning though.

The smoke in this tin is really special. Not overpowering or artificial. These are super simple, yet fantastically seasoned and flavorful little sprats. Super delicate and packed perfectly. I would 100% order these again when looking to mix things up with something special. Worth the splurge.

My favorite Fangst tin. I like their simplicity compared to the other Fangst sardines. These are becoming a go-to for me when I just want really good sardines. 10/10, can’t go back to grocery store tins after these.

  17. joshuaemailshield (verified owner)

These are small, sturdy sprats. They’re nicely smoked, but not overly. Some minerality/earthly/herbal and vegetal undertones, but just dancing around that smokiness.
I think these are best enjoyed with a fresh element and some bright flashes of maldon salt.

  18. Yousif Al-amin (verified owner)

I am a huge fan of Fangst tins and this tin does not disappoint! When you open the tin you find the sprats beautifully arranged and waiting to be eaten up! The texture is pretty interesting in that they are softer than many other tins almost to the point of melting in your mouth, but they still hold their shape and don’t fall apart when you eat them. Flavor not overly smokey. This is more of a splurge tin than a day-to-day tin but for something in the $8-10 range, it’s tough to beat. I have had a great experience across the board with the Fangst sprats and will definitely continue to order their tins!

These are such incredible little sprats. The smoke flavor is very mild, they’re soft, and melt in your mouth. They need absolutely nothing! So far, my favorite Fangst tin. We 9/10. Don’t sleep on these, you won’t regret picking them up!

  20. Emma Armstrong (verified owner)

Fangst is no joke, all of their tins so far have been amazing. I agree with previous reviews, that the smoke flavor on these is quite mild. The texture is so soft but holds together making it easy to eat on a cracker. I enjoyed these with a bit of cream cheese and dill.

  21. shs (verified owner)

I usually go to Fangst for their more unique flavor combos, but sometimes you just want a nice smoky tin of sprats without the extra hits. The smoke has a softness to it that matches the tenderness really well.

Out of my 10-ish tins purchased these had to have been my favorites! Bonus points the baby loved them too!
