Fangst Sprat no. 4 (Allspice & Clove) Baltic Sea

$9.50

Unsmoked, with a hint of allspice and clove.

’Brisling’ is a small fish that traditionally was landed in great numbers along the Scandinavian and Baltic coastlines. Here it was prepared by hand and preserved in cans to be sold as a Nordic version of sardine. The brisling from FANGST is our contribution to revive and create a new place for this fine fish as the ‘Nordic sardine’.

Hands down one of the best tins of fish I have ever eaten. Delicate flavor and texture. If these fish have any bones at I certainly can’t tell. Perfect on toast.

Fangst put out a high quality tinned fish product and this offering lives up the high standard they’ve set.

These sprats are a nice small size, which is good for those who are intimidated by larger pilchard sardines, and good for topping a cracker or bit of toast. They are fairly delicate, and break or fall apart while removing them from tin unless you’re very careful.

The texture is soft and, if you didn’t know that they had a hint of clove and allspice, you’d know they have a distinct, light flavor on top of the mild fish flavor, but you might not be able to pinpoint the exact flavor. These are delicious straight out of the tin, though given their delicate composition, they do will on top of a cracker and their flavor can be elevated with a bit of pickled red onion or shallot. Anything with a stronger flavor or texture may be overpowering.

These are delicious and a bit unique, worthy of adding to your must-try list.

Time to add Fangst to my top 5 list of sardine-ists. I can only explain these by saying “unbelievable depth of flavor.” I don’t particularly know what allspice tastes like … as for clove, sure, I can recognize that. But to say that if blind-folded, I could detect those flavors? Doubtful. They’re subtle, hard to notice but also still very present in that beautiful oil.

What this really tastes like is just deep, deep hellafied FLAVOR. Richness. Texture of the fish was very soft but I mean that in the best, it’s in a wonderful melt-in-your-mouth way. I … I love these Fangst sardines. I don’t know if these or the heather ones are better, but you’d better be darn sure that I’ll be getting both kinds again. You must, must try these beauties – treat yourself.

One of the highest quality tins of fish that I’ve ever had. Easily the best Brisling Sardine I’ve had. Usually, I prefer something along the lines of the standard Matiz in oil, large fish, moist, medium firmness. These Fangst No 4 are a nice counter-point to that profile. They were a bit larger than other Brisling Sardines that I’ve had. Incredibly moist, great texture, but the fish held together. Each fish was whole, skin intact, and was extracted without falling apart. This may not be terribly surprising until you consider how moist and delicate these fish are. The flavor was simply perfect. I am struggling to bring up better descriptors. Just trust me, these fish taste really good. Maybe one complaint: the allspice and clove are hard to detect outright, but probably contribute to the fantastic depth of flavor this tin had. I had about 1/3 of the tin with chopsticks, straight out of the oil. The other 2/3 I couldn’t resist but to toss them on top of some toast with wilted arugula (my usual go-to sardine prep). Overall, this is about as close to a perfect tin as I could imagine.

These are my absolute favorites. First, they’re beautiful. The texture is wonderful — not too meaty/dense, not at all mushy, and very uniform. They’re clearly prepared with a ton of care and attention that puts them in a different league from the cheaper options. The seasoning/recipe works well too as something a little out of the ordinary.

Kind of feel like I’m posting a review for the other outliers out there… but I didn’t really like this tin.

The fish are tiny and pretty and I didn’t have any trouble getting them out of the tin whole. They look great, they smell just fine, the texture is quite soft – I didn’t have any trouble getting them out of the tin whole, but you could easily eat them with no teeth.

I just didn’t think they taste great, which is always first priority. It’s like the clove and allspice are so faint they actually clash with, rather than enhance, the flavor of the fish, and the salt became pretty overpowering for me. I am not convinced the rapeseed oil is a better choice than others available.

I will say that this company was lovely and responsive when I asked if they could give me more vitamin and mineral info for the tin, and I wish them well but this just isn’t a tin for me.

I also did not especially like these, although I’m new to the sprat, and perhaps they are an acquired taste. I also went in with very high expectations. The texture was not totally pleasant to me- they were so firm, almost squeaky, and unlike the sardines/anchovies I’m used to. The flavoring was not prominent enough to feel like an add-on, more felt like a chemical-ly presence inherent to the fish. They are very attractive looking, pristine in the tin, obviously high quality fish, I just wasn’t that into them. Worth a try though, because maybe you will agree with the people above ^^^.

These are good! I prefer the heather and chamomile sprats by Fangst though, these seem a bit too faint on flavor for me.

I quite liked these, I expected the clove to be overpowering, but it was subtle. Left a nice lingering warmth along with the allspice after I had downed the fish, The Oil was incredible

Nice delicate flavor. These are my second fav Fangst Sprat, only to the unflavored tin. These have a nice light and warm flavor added in but not very distinct. Would recommend trying though for a bit if variety over the classic.

This might be a perfect tin. Tender little sardines that are seasoned just right. The clove comes through nicely in the oil. All very balanced and a real treat.

A very unique flavor for fish and a very special tin. I’ll admit I’m not ALWAYS in the mood for it, but it’s a great as a treat when you’re in the mood for something different. I haven’t tried cooking with these, and probably wouldn’t, because I think the key is to let these spices shine.
