The whimsical playfulness of the artwork on this tin (which I admit is one of the things that drew me in) is betrayed by the aromatic punch that jumps out at first crack of the tin. Wow. Strong and heavy, this fish did not come to play. This is the type of thing, that if you weren’t already salivating, will get the the juices flowing.

The tin I cracked had five fish in it – four moderate sized fellows and then a thick overachiever. I fished them out of the tin and found a couple of them to fracture and break easily while the others held together.

I tried one straight out of the tin and oh my, I had no idea… These are salty in the most pleasant way possible – not salty like the top fell off your salt shaker, but salty maybe like you dipped the sardine into the ocean before taking a bite… salty in a “I’m not sure what this new hipster salt is but I’m here for it” way.

After eating one straight, as-is, I tried it with some standard accompaniments: a slice of sourdough toast, some pickled red onions, and some Espinaler sauce. It turns out that just a bite of the fish with some strands of pickled red onions was the perfect bite. I’m skipping past the point of mentioning that the quality of the fish was top notch – great texture – not too firm, not too soft.

This is a surprising tin – fun artwork, strong aroma, and unique salty/mineral-like flavor profile. This is an experience tin, which you don’t always get at this price point – I recommend you give it a try – I’m definitely going to pick up some more to keep in the pantry.

I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect with this tin. Fleur de Sel and Extra Virgin Olive Oil isn’t going to make a huge flavor impact, I would expect. I came to this ready for anything. Overall, I liked this tin. Within the tin were 5 pretty large sardines. The skin was shimmery with a couple visible scales (which never bothers me). The oil is very richly colored olive oil. You can smell the oil right away and on closer inspection, it has a great sardine smell as well. Scooping out the sardines was easy as they held together just fine. Predictably, you can’t really taste the Fleur de Sel. Other than the fact that the sardines are, to my tastes, seasoned nicely. These are on the firmer side of how I prefer sardines (much firmer than a comparable Matiz, which is similar sized). My first bite made me wonder if these were a little too dry. But by the end of the tin, I liked both the texture and the moisture content. I definitely enjoyed these. These could become a regular for me. I’ll have to run these head-to-head against a few competitive tins, but I could see coming back to these. Another success for Ferrigno.

An above average tin of regular sardines, even without any of the additional flavors that make me really love Ferrigno artwork tins. The large size is so satisfying, each bite just … hits different than sprats. Texturally, the inside of each sardine isn’t dry but also isn’t moist. Despite what that description might sound like, I think this difference actually adds to the experience and makes these a better tin. The quality is typical Ferrigno, they very well might have the most consistent sardine quality in any brand I’ve had.

Even when eating these by themselves at room temp, this tin has enough interest/flavor to enjoy without adding anything else. What about adding Espinaler sauce? Slight improvement, the acidity is welcomed but I found that I lost a little sardine flavor. What about Tabasco sauce? Great match for these sardines, bringing some brightness/smoke/heat while still complementing the fish itself.

Overall, this tin earns Ferrigno yet another thumbs up. And it’s especially recommended if you like getting ‘regular’ sardines and adding hot sauce.

These were delicious! I was greeted to what I thought were 4 sardines, but ended up being 5 after doing some digging. Really nice firm fish, needed some convincing to break apart on bread. I didn’t find these to be too salty at all, I usually add a sprinkle of fleur de sel to my deens but these were great as is. Really nice clean flavored fish and a great value tin. My mind immediately went to, how good are the butter version of these? Only one way to find out I suppose.

I really enjoyed this tin! There’s not a lot to say about something as simple as this besides, “they were delicious.” You really just can’t go wrong with fish+oil+salt, and Ferrigno does all three well.

As far as practical matters are concerned, my tin had four shiny, silvery fish, of medium firm texture. They were quite similar to other Ferrigno fish, just maybe a tiny bit softer. But I imagine that can change can-to-can, so your mileage may vary. The fish were well packed, and didn’t seem inundated in oil.

I don’t think they need any extra fixing up/flavoring to be enjoyable–I had them with rice and a fried egg and the simplicity was perfect. But, if you wanted to add them to a more complex dish, I think they would also work really well there since you don’t have to worry about other flavors in the can affecting the rest of the dish. Or just add hot sauce if you like. If I had any hot sauce I definitely would’ve tried it, but alas, I don’t.

These are so well seasoned! Nice bright flavor like the ocean. As with most tins I’ve gotten from this brand, there were four large fish that were a medium firmness. Very high quality. Enjoyed on some sourdough toast and these made for a great dinner. Excited to get these again – great value for the price.

Decided to go for what seems to be one of the plainer Janes in the Ferrigno line with just fleur de sel. Nothing noseworthy upon opening to reveal five fish inside, which all came out intact. There were a few scales but were fine looking fish otherwise. As with the other Ferrignos, good moist texture and a solid overall fish. However, these were some very salty fish. By far the saltiest sardine I have had. I sometimes complain that a tin is under salted, but these were too salty for my liking. Is 0.5% salt unusually high for a tin of sardines? I think this is the first one that I remember seeing salt listed as a percentage. The strange thing is that the salt only seemed to be in the fish and not the oil. I think this tin is better suited to be added to a salad of bitter greens than eating straight from the tin.
