I am a big fan of tinned mackerel and this offering from Gulf of Maine Conservas is both the most unique mackerel I’ve tried and the best.

Unlike other tinned mackerel that is often a whole filet, large part of a filet, or small whole fish, you’ll find chunks of skin-on filets in this tin. Extracting these morsels from the can helps open up a mild fish aroma, and setting them out on a plate to showcase their beautiful mottled charcoal and silver skin adds another dimension to enjoy and appreciate.

This mackerel has a firm yet delicate texture, as well as a delicate flavor. They are absolutely delicious on their own, while elevated with a bit of pickled red onion or shallot on top of a simple cracker.

If you like mackerel I think you’ll love this tin. If you’ve not loved mackerel in the past, this one could change your mind.

Unlike your standard tin of mackerel, these are not fillets, but rather chunks of fillets. They still had the skin on, which I like as mackerel has beautifully striped skin. This tin had a stronger scent and flavor than I am accustomed to. Not bad, just different. Most of the mackerel that I eat comes from Europe, while these were fished of the New Hampshire coast. I also think these might be larger, more mature fish than the ones used for the usual European can of fillets. Perhaps the different fishing area and maturity of the fish accounted for the more assertive scent and taste. The texture was both very moist but still toothsome. The olive oil is also fantastic. You’ll want to use it as a dipping sauce for the fish as the saltiness of the oil gives the fish an extra spark. Overall, a delicious tin. If you are looking for something slightly different than the normal European mackerel, give this one a try.
