This is comfort food in a can. I’m not exactly sure what saury is, but I’d say in this particular preparation they have a mild fish flavor and a texture in between a sardine and a mackerel. I’ve had other tins of fish in this type of sweet soy sauce and it’s always a treat, and this was no different. The cut of the fish is nice – a good bite-sized cross section of fish providing good texture and bite. Sweet, savory, salty, and a bit fishy – that’s a winning combination. Piled on top of some rice, it’s like a warm hug in bowl.

This was my first can of this style of fish. The fish were like the larger sardine size cut in hunks. No scales or bones to note. The sauce was very lightly flavored. I ate this with warm rice and soy sauce. I warmed the can by immersing in boiling water first to heat up the fish in the can. This worked really well. The fish texture was a little more solid than some I have eaten but not a negative, just a slightly different firmer texture. I would like a little stronger flavor, so perhaps I will try another version of this style as it went to well with the white rice. A strong breakfast choice I enjoyed.

I’m really mixed on this fish. It definitely has its pros and cons and could be just what someone is looking for. On the positive side, each bite is substantial, looks good, and nicely firm. Some quality pieces of fish. Then there are aspects that are personal preference, like I found the soy sauce it was sitting in to be too sweet. It doesn’t have a caramelized sweetness, its more cloying in my opinion. Lastly is something that I’d say is definitely a negative is, straight from the can, the outside has taken on a slimy texture. That was alleviated when they became more fully warmed by the rice I ate them on, but was off putting at first. I’m definitely interested in trying more Japanese saury, but I think I’ll steer clear from sweet soy sauce.

Sauce is too sweet for me. The fish is very firm and dry. Doesn’t have the nice oil feel of sardines. Flavor of the fish is good. Just not for me. Good, nit great.
