José Gourmet Codfish in Olive Oil and Garlic

$15.50

Dan’s Tasting Notes: Don’t let “garlic” in the name of this scare you off, there’s the barest hint of it, from a single slice included in the tin. The photos I took make it look like the pieces are more broken up than they really are, this was almost entirely composed of chunks the right size for placing on a saltine. I really enjoyed this product. The flakes were what you’d expect (and want) from cod, large and distinct. The texture was quite firm for a fish and for a tinned fish, providing a satisfying chew. If you’re not sure you’re ready for mollusks and bivalves, and are dubious about anchovies and sardines, start here. You won’t stop here.

To talk about cod is to dive in a deeply rooted tradition in Portugal. For a long time, only salted and dried cod deserved full attention. But enthusiasm for canned food started to increase gradually. Caught in the North East Atlantic, the cod we use to prepare our cans is paired with olive oil and garlic, thus preserving the traditional combination of this Portuguese dish.

Once upon a time, an olive tree decided to stand by the sea, hoping to spot a codfish. She waited, and waited, and waited some more…but none was to be seen! So patiently did she wait that she forgot to shed her leaves. Finally, she sighted a similar fish, but its head was different. Its head looked like a garlic bulb. The olive tree held on to her best olives and offered her the best oil, as she would do every time somebody came ashore.

This canned cod is solid! No really! Its surprisingly very firm without being dry by any means. There’s just a subtle kiss of garlic and salt that is mostly present in the pieces at the bottom of the can that are fully saturated in oil. One of my favorite meals my mom would make growing up was cod baked with a butter cracker crust on top, so I’m enjoying this on top of some nice buttery crackers. I can also echo the sentiments in the description regarding the look of the pieces of fish. The picture does not accurately represent it where my can contained sizeable filets instead of smaller shreds and flakes like in the image. Ultimately it makes for a very savory treat for flaky cod lovers.

Wow! Quite a unique tin. I found this one to be very filling, enjoyed with some Ritz crackers. The cod itself was flaky and high quality, still remaining dense enough to easily scoop onto crackers or any vessel of choice. Buttery, indulgent, and something I’ll definitely buy again!

This has that salted codfish texture a lot of us are familiar with (spongey, chewy) which is nostalgic but not my favorite. Put it on some fresh baked bread with the usual dressings and it was ok. Would have to try some of the posted recipes but probably will stick with my faves and try new stuff. Definitely not for the uninitiated. Still think fried cod fish (fish and chips style) is the way to go with this species.

This was only my second codfish tin and I liked it, but I don’t think I’ll be ordering it again as it’s quite a bit more expensive than the other codfish tin that I liked more (Bela Codfish in Extra Virgin Olive Oil). The texture is exactly what I expected; the garlic was extremely subtle which I knew from Dan’s notes before ordering although I definitely would have preferred more garlic. I was curious to try another codfish tin after the Bela one because I liked the buttery flavor of the Bela tin. This one didn’t seem quite as buttery to me (granted it’s been about half a year since I had the Bela), but it was definitely still enjoyable on sourdough toast with some coarse-ground sea salt, black pepper, and oregano. I’m curious to try even more codfish tins now.

Another hit from Jose Gourmet! This tin was a pleasure to crack open, filled with beautiful, firm chunks of cod in a delightfully smooth, golden oil. The flavor took me by surprise, but in a good way. I was expecting a mild taste, but this tin is full of flavor. The fish is firm yet moist, packed with a well-salted and surprisingly garlicky taste. I was expecting the garlic to be much more subtle, but as a garlic lover, I’m glad it was pronounced enough to contribute a substantial facet of this tin’s flavor profile. Nonetheless, the flavor of the cod itself still shines through, making for a wonderfully balanced tin. I enjoyed this tin with chips, salted thyme crackers, and cheese spread.

For a usually mild fish, this tin has pleasant salt levels, nice garlic, and nicely sized chunks. Jose Gourmet’s codfish is my favorite across tins of all types of seafood I have tried. It’s a celebratory treat to me and I struggle to not eat it all straight out of the tin.

Tapas for breakfast! I’d pickled a batch of sliced red onions the other day, so I enjoyed this delicious cod on a bed of onions, sprinkled with crushed kale chips, a squeeze of fresh lemon, and a grind of black pepper. Lovely way to start the day, dreaming of a trip to Portugal.

Very fine tidbits of cod, chewy in the characteristic way. The description invokes garlic, but that’s not really a note I detect. I’m beginning to suspect European palates are just more discerning—or more delicate—than ours here in the States. The “Spicy” sardines from France, Spain, and Morocco that I’ve sampled have been lots of things, but spicy wasn’t one of them. Don’t mistake me: I am enjoying my Grand Tour of Tinned Fish. But I kinda wish at the same time so providers would truly kick up the herbs and spices in newer varieties.

I feel fairly neutral about this tin, I suppose I liked but I also feel meh about it. The cod was many small pieces, which was a bit of an annoyance when eating. The texture was firm but not unpleasantly so. The flavor was very, very mild and I couldn’t taste even a hint of garlic. It was fine, but I wanted more overall from the tin. I would eat it again if it was in front of me but I won’t buy it again as there wasn’t anything standout about it for me.

The fish itself is of very high quality. Large, white, and meaty chunks fill 3/4 of the can. The olive oil itself is also clearly of high quality, and really lets the fish shine on its own.

I’ll get to the bad here, a few pieces were downright chewy, but not at all unpleasant. I also found the fish to be too salty. It’s cooked and prepared wonderfully, but it’s a touch too salty for my taste. Which is a shame because for me this could have been the perfect tin, but as it is I think it’s worth the price and is still very delicious tinned fish. Personal preference aside objectively this is great and I do recommend grabbing a tin to try at least. I ate it with rice and furikake for a very satisfying meal. Of course I had some right out of the warmed up tin first.

I mentioned the few chewy bits, but I would be wrong not to mention the bites that literally melted in my mouth. Those decadent bites are worth the price of admission alone. Try it out for yourself, it’s worth a shot if it’s within your budget and makes for a great meal.
