King Oscar Mackerel Fillets in Olive Oil with Lemon

$3.50

Lemon and fish, need I say more? OK, I will. Nothing cuts through the oil in the same way as citrus, it’s one of the world’s most firmly fixed pairings for a reason: lemon makes seafood taste better.

115g tin

Like the other King Oscar mackerels, it doesn’t look very nice, but it had a nice light lemon scent and a good, medium texture and the milder taste that I’ve come to expect from mackerel. The lemon flavor came through well but was not as acidic as I was expecting. The lemon flavored oil mixture would work in making a vinaigrette for a salad or even to help sauté some diced vegetables. It would probably make a good mackerel salad for a sandwich if you mashed it up with some diced celery, onions, cracked pepper and some fresh parsley and dill.

Better moisture & flavor than most other mackerel tins. If you’ve tried mackerel before and been disappointed (primarily on moisture/texture), you owe it to yourself to try King Oscar mackerel – it’s much better than what you’d expect at this price point. Texturally, this tin is what I always *want* a regular can of tuna to be but it never is … flavor is mild, flake is solid, and more importantly this fish is *not* dry sawdust. The KO mackerel moisture (and in general, honestly) is miles ahead of other mackerel I’ve tried.

Lemon presence here is noticeable but not over the top. I always want a TON of lemon and while this isn’t a ton, it’s enough to give the thumbs up. Lacks a little salt but overall, it’s a very solid tin that definitely ranks as above average for mackerel. While my personal preference is the KO Mediterranean mackerel over this one, I will happily get this again especially at this price.

Hream McDan said it best, King Oscar has “better moisture & flavor than most other mackerel tins”, in my opinion. I’m a KO mack babe through & through but this my least favorite of their tins. The lemon here is strongly flavored of rind oils & pretty strong. Not acidic in the slightest. Fish itself is excellent as usual.

This was an interesting tin for me with things I liked and disliked. First, the Mackeral itself had a very light bite. I prefer a meatier mackerel with a touch more firmness. This tin was more like mackerel flakes than solid filets. That said, if I take this on its own terms, it was still terrific and was great served over some mashed avocado on a Wassa cracker, but wouldn’t be my first choice next time I crack open a tin of mack. There is a bit of natural lemon acidity, but there is also some added lemon flavor that adds a sort of chemical astringency that really cuts through the oiliness of the fish and adds a slightly bitter note to the whole tin. The flavor was more of lemon peel than juice. So that might be a plus for many and a negative for others.

Good for the price point, very moist which I enjoy. Obviously not as good as more expensive tins, but a really good substitute for tuna in my opinion. I personally wouldn’t eat it plain, but mixed into a sandwich or recipe it would be perfect. Will definitely get when I am running on a tight budget.

I had this tin with a salad and it had positives and negatives. The positive was the fish itself, it felt like a generous portion and was a perfect middle ground of firmness, not too chewy but not mushy, either. It tastes moist and flakes nicely. The price is also great, which is another positive.

A negative is the flavor of the lemon… It’s very strong and to me, tastes really fake and it comes off a bit chemically. The more I ate of it, the worse it got and I couldn’t finish the whole tin simply because I really disliked the lemon flavor.

I would buy KO mackerel again but I would skip this specific flavor.

This would be a great tin to turn a hesitant friend over to the tinned fish side, especially if they are familiar with tuna in their diet! I have no complaints for this mackerel. Moisture was good, and the lemon flavor was present without being over powering. I’m really convinced that KO does no wrong at this point. Yes, you can get higher quality, but not at this price! Another solid option overall.
