As always, King Oscar mackerel won’t win any beauty contests, and this tin had one large and two smaller pieces packed in with several pepper slices. The texture was a bit chewier and drier than usual for KO, but it was still moist. Flavor was mild and the pepper flavor very subdued, with just the faintest of heat after the finish. This did have a bit of sweetness from the sugar. If you like the flavor of jalapeños without a lot of heat, this might be your tin.

I’ve been tasting a few different tins of mackerel and, I’m not really sure what they’re doing to achieve this, but KO filets have been consistently more succulent/juicy/fatty/ tender than those filets of the next tier of pricing. I don’t care that they fall apart a little/ aren’t as visually defined – they have the texture and succulence of a proper confit. Something about the highly industrial process I guess?

Ignorance of the actual practices of KO aside – THIS TIN IS BOMB. Something clicked for me when I chewed my first piece. As previous review states “If you like the flavor of jalapenos without a lot of heat, this might be your tin”. Precisely. Utterly craveable & somewhat strong jalapeno flavor with very mild heat. Even if you’re seeking heat, this is a very unique jalapeno experience & worth a try.
This is a tin I want to eat everyday.

Solid tin that won’t let you down in quality or taste. Above-average texture compared to all mackerel tins but quite not as moist/flavorful as the outstanding KO Mediterranean mackerel (which is in a league of its own). Must be something different here with the jalapenos that makes it end up a little drier than other KO mackerel. Love getting actual full slices of jalapeno – I got 5-6 pieces – but I wish there wasn’t an ever-so-slight sweetness covering up some of that flavor. Spiciness was probably 1.5 out of 5 and came through on the backend.

I prefer Ocean’s mackerel with jalapeno over this KO tin, but this is still worth trying especially at this price point. While it might not be an absolute stunner to eat straight from the tin, it would be a great choice to sub in for canned tuna in any recipe.

This is a really good tin of mackerel for the price. The jalapeños add a decent level of heat but isn’t overpowering. The fish is nice and moist, however there is a hint of sweetness that I find a bit off-putting to my palate. However this is a nitpick in an other good tin. I prefer the Mediterranean KO version but I would be happy to try this again.
