King Oscar Sardines (Sprats) in Dijon Mustard

$3.50

When polled, 9 out of 10 sardine eaters who used to share them with their grandfather while sitting on his lap remember the sardines being in mustard. It’s science. Grandfathers know what’s good. We find something about the Dijon mustard flavor seems to slightly amplify the fishy flavor, and not in a bad way. We highly recommend serving with red onions and a dark rye bread.

One layer, 8-12 fish

106g tin

Pictured with bread grilled in fish oil, red onion, butter lettuce, and hard boiled egg.

This was a great can of sprats. Went great with crackers or just out of the can without crackers. KO has a great product here. I will buy these again.

So this was my very first can of sardines and as it was part of a larger order decided on these as I am a huge mustard fan. I have seen multiple reviews of King Oscar products and these did not disappoint. These were a nice introduction to sardines as they had a nice texture and the bones were undetectable which I was worried about. The mustard was not of your normal sinus clearing Dijon but was a milder flavor without a ton of punch but very nice flavor. I enjoyed these with both Ritz crackers and small pieces of a soft French bread and both were excellent choices. If you’re a mustard fan I would say these are a solid choice.

As a mustard fan these intrigued me. Opened them up and saw that they were completely entrenched with a thick slathering. The aroma was fragrant but not overpowering.

First bite I was surprised at how complimentary the flavor components are. Subtle sweetness, tangy vinegar and an overall creamy consistency. The fish themselves were moderately firm, and the bones are undetectable.

Pleased that the mustard wasn’t overpowering, and rather mild. Could see these pairing well with a cracker/bread. A fun change of pace!

I’m not a huge fan of sardines in mustard, but I got these because I’m trying to try all of the King Oscar varieties. I was really pleasantly surprised! I think inferior brands like Beach Cliff and Bumblebee had given me a bias against mustard ‘dines. This mustard was really flavorful and clearly higher quality. I enjoyed these on top of bread and would buy them again.

Great sprats in a subdued sauce, just as you’d expect from KO. These broke apart just a tad easier than the white wine vinegar ones I had, but I extracted the majority of fish out without breakage. Despite the price point, the mustard inside is still very good quality. I think KO is rightly proud of their fish, so they mellow their flavors out. I love very pungent mustard, so the only small criticism I could have of these. Personally I prefer the vinegar&capers because I love vinegar but I would definitely stock these.

Where have these been all my life? This has become one of my favorite tins. The mustard perfectly complimented the ‘dines inside. The fish were firm and did not break apart. I ate them straight from the tin, but they would be fantastic on a baguette round or cracker. I will be ordering more than one tin next time.
