These are peppery little flavor bombs for sure. Greeted by a fishy smell upon opening the can that thankfully does not translate into the flavor. Obviously also very peppery. I’m eating these straight from the can to have an unbiased take on them and after half of the can my tongue is starting to tingle. There is no lemon within but it has almost a lemon/citrus flavor as well, I’m assuming from the varieties of peppercorns used. The fish itself is very soft, however the cracked peppercorns add a pleasant crunch to counteract it. Would I recommend eating these standalone? Probably not. But I do think they could be excellent if prepared in a recipe with something to cut the intensity of the pepper. The oil has become incredibly flavorful and could be utilized elsewhere.

These are probably my favorite KO’s I’ve tried so far, I’m a big black pepper fan and this delivers. I wouldn’t call it outright spicy, but the tingle does build over time. The fish is decently firm and very flavorful. I paired these with some Espinaler sauce on a cracker and a blood orange San Peligrino, pretty much perfect.

Respect to you, King. Over the past few years of my sardine journey, I have admittedly discounted King Oscar quite a bit … felt like I’d long since moved on from KO, onto bigger and better things. But you know what, I shouldn’t have written them off. While the plain KO tins might no longer hold any appeal to me, there are still some really excellent KO *flavored* tins out there and this is certainly one.

Wonderfully, wonderfully peppery. Has both peppercorns and (what appears to be) ground pepper, both on top and underneath the fish. Spicy? No, no way, not in a true spicy sense but TRULY peppery without being overwhelming. I am shocked at how much I enjoyed this flavor. It’s so unique, so distinct, so accurate to the label. The sardines themselves are typical KO – a touch soft, a touch floppy but by no means objectionable … they’re the canvas that the pepper is painted upon and it works wonderfully. The flavor is all the way thru the oil and fish in a beautiful way.

I’m going to keep ordering this tin. It’s a bargain and a unicorn. Brilliant.

Absolutely delicious and packed with peppery flavor. This immediately became one of my household’s favorites from King Oscar. I wouldn’t say it’s super spicy, but there definitely is a kick – the more you eat, the stronger it gets. The bits of whole peppercorn were also a wonderful touch – not only did they look pretty in the tin, but they added a fun texture and tasted great with the fish! :^)
