King Oscar Sardines (Sprats) in Zesty Tomato Sauce

$3.50

The four pillars of tinned fish are: plain in olive oil, olive oil and lemon, olive oil and hot pepper of some kind, and tomato sauce. These are the combinations that are universally recognized as good.

We prefer to serve products with tomato sauce (and/or onions) at least warmed, we believe it makes for a better mouthfeel experience. But what do we know about tomatoes? Lots of people happily eat them straight from the tin. Our favorite way is to pour the tin out over a dish of freshly made rice and let the hot rice warm the sauce and the ‘dines. There is no wrong way if you like it.

Talk about bang for your buck! These are delicious. I had them with saltine crackers and salsa Espinaler. Nice thick, tasty sauce. It felt like a complete meal. 5 stars!

These are really filling. Meaty, ever so slightly smoked, and if there were bones, they were inoffensive and largely unnoticeable. I had these room temp over white rice, and I added a bit of chili oil and espinaler sauce to wake it up. I wouldn’t consider the sauce “zesty,” but it was certainly hearty and remarkably thick, with chunks of tomato throughout. These were excellent, and for the value, these will definitely be a pantry staple for me. 4.5/5

Nice small fish arranged neatly in rows, topped with a thick, rich looking red sauce.
The fish are soft yet still have some texture to them…I would prefer a firmer bite but it’s okay…they have a very good sardine flavor and are not fishy…
The tomato sauce is actually pretty good compared to many that I have tried…it has a decent richness and a pleasing thick consistency…you get a hit of paprika and some salt…there is nothing here that could be confused as hot…they could use more spice, but then that’s always my complaint…just the right amount of salt to bring out the flavors…
I gently heated the tin by way of the toaster and dumped the contents onto a bowl of Heim Gemacht Egg Noodles, that had been mixed with various cheeses and garlic…this was delicious!
This was a good tin…on par with the pricier Sea Tales (Whole Foods), and much better than Goya (Wegmans)

Typical KO quality. Tomato sauce isn’t really very spicy. I added a little Espinaler and it helped quite a bit. This a good product for the price.
