King Oscar “Tiny Tots” Brisling (Sprats) Sardines in Extra Virgin Olive Oil

$3.50

Back in olden times, King Oscar used to offer their products in the USA under three different brand names, depending on the region of the country they were being sold in. The three brands were King Oscar, Tiny Tots, and Spirit of Norway. Over the years the Spirit of Norway brand was phased out, but the Tiny Tots following was just too devoted to the brand. Legend and lore say that there’s a little more “royal love” in the Tiny Tots than in the King Oscar. Who are we to argue with irrational passions?

Two layer, 12-22 fish.

No difference between these and the King Oscar Sardines (Sprats). In my opinion, these are a bit on the mushy side and the oil isn’t anything to write home about, but its cheap and good eating!

I preferred the King Oscar Cross-Pack sardines, but I’d happily buy these again to mush up on toast.

I liked these but they were not ‘exciting’ just good simple eating sardines. I love the smaller size, a preference I am finding I have. No skin, scales or bone issues and they were excellent with toast and pickles. Definitely worth their cost, I would buy them again.

if there is such a thing as a goto/daily sardine — this is mine. oily, salty, umami, lightly smoked, moderately firm, small fish in oil.

super approachable. this is actually the tin i recommend to friends who say they don’t like sardines.

The perfect introduction to sardines. Wonderfully packed, not too fishy. The oil smells strong, but not pungent. I had these over rice with a fried egg, and I was changed forever. Rich and filling without being too greasy.

Peeling back the top, I was pleasantly surprised by the two layers! The equivalent of a mini travel aquarium awaits you. Greeted by the 24 lil tots all neatly packed and ready, I dove in cocktail fork first.

In my experience they fell apart quite easily, but their small stature made it manageable. Flavor wise between the salty oil, being lightly smoked, and overall consistency these swing way above their weight class. Filling and delicious. Had to check the price again because I feel like they are a steal for the return on investment. Daily-Dine-Driver? I think so!

A lot of my love for these could be the cute size and packaging. But I had these for breakfast on scali toast with butter, cracked pepper, scrambled egg and parsley and couldn’t have been happier. There were a ton in the tin, at least 20.

These are some tasty little morsels! These are just the right “mushiness” for me as they held up to a fork well, but bent in half quite easily. The price point is great and with a little mustard, these are now my go to sardines.

The perfect utility sardine. These are something I could come back to day after day. I feel like there is a slightly different finish to these than the normal king oscar sardines, they feel a little leaner and there is less oil in the tin. But you get a lovely simple flavor that is ready to jazz up with your favorite accoutrements – which is where these shine. These are a blank canvas to work into your recipes rather than being strongly flavored in their own right. Versatile.

Nice presentation with the fish uniformly interlaced and all the skin nicely intact. Not a fishy taste but slightly bitter, could be the fish or the oil but good as an ingredient. With rice, or salad completely masks the bitterness and the soft meat is otherwise pleasant. Easy to turn to mash for recipes.

An above-average tin of sprats for an amazing price. I’m not much of a sprat person, but dollar-for-dollar this is a solid can of fish. My tin had 14 small fish, beautifully packed – Lightly golden in color, lightly smoked with a medium-firm texture that held together nicely. If you like sprats at all, you owe it to yourself to try these. A Best Buy.
