    Fillets of mackerel, plural, in the tin I cracked open for lunch turned out to be just one beefy hunk of a fillet, quite firm, quite tasty, skin on, absolutely no scales, nothing unwelcome in any way. All good in the fish department.

    The “Catalan Sauce,” though was a surprise to me. Looking quickly at the label and the ingredient list, I said to meself, “Oh, spaghetti sauce–cool.” And while it’s tomato-based, it’s not marinara-like. For starters, read through those ingredients again. See what’s not there? Garlic, that’s what. But the list does feature sugar. Catalan sauce–and here I’m adopting the assumption that this is typical of the variety–is less piquant, and more sweet (way more) than any Italian-style tomato sauce you might be used to. Nothing wrong with that–I’m sure it’s all the rage in Catalonia–it’s just not what I guessed it might be. And if I’m being honest, I found myself wishing for a bite more garlicky, vinegar-y bite, since I feel as though those notes come together so well with good mackerel like this.
