Les Mouettes d’Arvor Sardinettes in Olive Oil with Piment d’Espelette 8/10

$11.50

We love Piment d’Espelette here, so this product was a no-brainer. Small sardines and the beguiling pepper famous throughout the Basque region? When we found out these existed we went hunting for them and didn’t stop until we could share them with you. If you love the flavor, we also sell the powdered pepper, and make a spiced peanut with it.

Firm, Tasty and Spicy….what else could you want in a can of sardines…..a cheaper price. These are $10 a can….It was a one time treat….now back to the real world.

I like these so, so, so much. It’s the only tin I’ve found, where the flavor (smoky piment d’espelette) has fully seeped into every bite of those dinettes. My tin wasn’t the prettiest, but it was one of the most delicious I’ve ever had. Bravo, Mouettes!!

My experience with small sardines is limited, and upon trying this tin yesterday, it immediately jumped to the front of the pack. Beautifully woven into the tin, the fish had a nice firm quality without being dry. A little pricey for sure, but worth it, if you want a special occasion tin, especially considering that the olive oil in there is very high quality for dipping a nice fresh baguette slice in.

I love Mouettes d’Arvor’s mackerel; this is my second tin of sardines from them I’ve tried, the other being with Sichuan peppercorns. The sardinettes are good—little guys, well packed in delicious olive oil.

But just like with the tin of full-size sardines with Sichuan peppercorns, I can hardly detect the added flavor at all. If anything, the earthiness of the piment d’espelette draws out the gamy/funky/gutsy qualities of the fish without bringing in an interesting new quality. If there were some acidic or spicy zing, it might even out, but I think I’d’ve enjoyed these more unflavored.

I wonder if I’m opening it too soon, and the fish would absorb more flavor if left a little longer on the shelf?

Really enjoyed this tin – it made me realize that I prefer the size and texture of small sardines to the larger, meatier varieties you usually find. Here, the flavor of the oil also seems to really seep into the meat, rather than just coating the fish. The flavor of the smoky piment d’espellete is not necessarily strong, but it is distinct and present throughout the bite. Oil itself also felt high quality.
