Marusa Shirasu Whitebait (“Anchovies”) with Garlic Flakes and Togarishi

$14.50

Whitebait is the immature fry of a variety of different species, in these Japanese products it is primarily anchovy and a lesser amount of sardine. Used as a garnish atop vegetable or tofu dishes served atop or alongside rice, or even as the sole topper for a bowl of rice.

“Togarishi” means pepper, the specific pepper in this is Takanotsume, which translates to “The Claw of the Hawk”.

This was the first can of an omakase curated by Dan. It didn’t disappoint. While the appearance was surprising (if you didn’t watch the video), the taste was meaty (not fishy) with a little spice. The appearance reminded me of the pictures of the Spanish baby eels, but without the exorbitant price. It was very good over rice. A great experience! I would buy this product again.

I absolutely loved this switch up from the European tins I’ve been enjoying. The size of the fish were perfect to mix into rice and top with an egg for a flavorful and VERY easy meal. The garlic and togarashi were well balanced with the whitebait itself.

Tin is packed with what at first glance appears to be eels, but in reality these are the “fry” of immature anchovies…slices of garlic on top…and tiny rings from a cut pepper?…
Surprisingly good chew and there is some mild heat, which lingers on the palate, but it is balanced with the flavors of the tin. The oil is of very good quality. A very tasty “fish” flavor, which mingles with the Togarishi, and a faint hint of garlic.
    Overall the combination is delicious.
It is a very unique flavor which is hard for me to describe, leans toward the fish end of the spectrum yet has a crab like sweetness…again delicious!
To those who avoid anything with spicy heat…fear not this tin!
I had my concerns that this tin would be on the bland side of things, but it is most definitely not…I had this tin on toasted artisan bread as I am just not a rice person, and this worked very well.

Holy CRAP these were good. I had ordered this a couple months ago and was a little scared to try it, but I had a tinned fish picnic with a friend and it was a perfect excuse to finally try these. The flavor and texture are both amazing and I wish I would have saved some to try in different dishes. Will definitely order again! And to anyone hesitant to eat these, bite the bullet!!!
