Surprising and delightful! This was my first experience with cockles; I would describe them as smaller, sweeter clams with a less chewy texture. Docked a star because there was a little bit of sand in my tin, but it didn’t deter much from how tasty the cockles were. I used them to make a pasta, and salted the final dish with the brine; don’t waste it!

Like most tin-fish fans, I started with sardines and am just beginning to discover the wide variety of delicacies out there. Enter Wild Cockles in Sea Salt Brine. Exactly as shown in the photos above, this tin was packed with very small “baby clams” in a plain salt-water brine. They have a bit of chew to them, moderately so. I wouldn’t call them tender by any means, but they’re not overly tough either. Since there is no oil or spice to alter the flavor profile here, they do possess a little bit of a fishiness to them, but not bad. I adapted quickly to both the texture and the “flavor of the sea.” These cockles would be great to have in the pantry for cooking, to make a pasta dish special or, as I did, to turn a large bowl of kimchi into a far more satisfying lunch. You could also whip up a special sandwich salad spread, like tuna salad or crab salad but with these instead. As far as enjoying straight from the tin with a fork, I personally would choose the “Matiz Mussels in Oil & Vinegar” over these cockles because they have a much yummier accompanying “sauce.” They’re also a little bit cheaper. But if you want something unique to add wow-factor to a pasta dish or a salad, these will fit the bill.

Exactly what I would expect: a reasonable brine (not overly salty) with a perfect and modestly chewy mouthfeel. Aesthetically, these cockles were smaller than I might have thought and they had an orange-colored accent. The quantity was more than I expected. Aromatically, they were exactly as I was expecting with only a light shellfish essence. I really enjoyed this tin and I think that the recommendation to incorporate these cockles in a pasta dish are on-point. Paired with garlic, tomato and a light oregano treatment, these would be a sublime meal. Delicious. If you like muscles, these are a must-try.

Cockles are definitely the most alien looking thing I’ve eaten out of a can. I put these on top of 3 slices of toasted sourdough with butter and while I enjoyed the chewy textures, the flavor was lacking. Next time, I will have to incorporate some kind of sauce or spread to complement the cockles.

These little guys are like a little can of ocean goodness. The moment you open it, they smell all fresh and beachy (in the best way), promising some real sea flavor and it does not disappoint. They taste like steamers, but a bit sweeter. They are kept nice and tender in the delicious brine. I ate them straight from the can, but cannot wait until the next time to put them on top of some warm garlic bread, or thrown into a pasta dish.

My first time with cockles. A nice experience They did remind me of steamers a little. Good salty brine , tender. I melted some butter and dunked each one as I ate. A nice treat without breaking the bank.

These were absolutely delicious. They’re tasty straight from the can. As mentioned above they smeall and taste like the sea in the best way possible. We cooked them in red sauce over pasta. They were a nice upgrade from clams. The texture of the cockles is delightful – no grit, each of them bite-sized and tender. These cockles will add an nice upgrade to any dish.

With a little squirt of lemon and straight out of the fridge, the brine reminded me of oysters liquor so I just drank that straight up 🙂 I had these tasty cockles over a bowl of rice and it was delicious. I hope to get more after I go through all my existing tins. I did have a little bit of grit in the cockles but no more that what I’d get from fresh mussels.
