These are solid fish, I bought them on a whim because I love the Matiz spicy in oil and octopus so much. This tin had 3 nice fat sardines, they were a little bit softer than the spicy that I normally buy but not mushy. The flavor was excellent I was actually surprised at how good they were, light smoke, I only tried these straight from the can but i could imagine them going well in any dish you would use plain sardines in, I will add these to my rotation.

Matiz is an absolute sardine rock star. This ‘lightly smoked’ variety is harder to find than the other kinds, but it’s worth it. I do wish these had more smoke -like Riga, can you EVEN imagine that level of smoke on these huge filets?!?!- but wow, they are simply exceptional. Massive size, meaty texture, perfect balance between firm and soft, top quality oil, top quality taste.

If I had to choose only 1 sardine tin to eat for the rest of my life, factoring in both taste and price, these very well might win that competition. They’re in my top 5, **maybe even top 3** for the best quality/price ratio. Since they’re not strongly flavored in any direction other than delicious, they can be the star of every single application you could think of (including straight-from-the-tin).

Any time that a friend / family member mentions that they enjoy sardines (and it’s usually that they mean King Oscar), I give them a can of Matiz and it never fails to recalibrate their brain on what a great sardine really can be. If you love sardines and you’ve not had Matiz, you must MUST try these or the regular tin.

After ordering a few tins online I went with this for my first experience of tin fish. I was hesitant to say the least but was so impressed by the flavors. I expected much more of a fishy taste but these were so pleasantly mild with just a hint of smokiness. Ate them out of the can with my 9 year old who absolutely loved them and we ate them on homemade crostini with a little bit of cholula hot sauce and some of the oil in the can and was just blown away.
Even though this is the only tin fish I’ve tried so far I feel like its such a great intro tin fish with its simplicity. I could really see it being extremely versatile across a wide variety of dishes or just on its own. 10 out of 10!

Absolutely delicious! I received three large sardines in this tin which were all fully intact, and well preserved.

These sardines had a slightly salty and lightly smoked flavor, that I added a little something to the natural fishiness of sardines. Simple, yet complex it perfect with some boiled potatoes and a squeeze of lemon.

For five dollars and change this tin is hard to compete with. Will be re-purchasing for sure!

alrighty – eating these right now. realtime. espinaler sauce & saltines.

4 large fish, packed tightly. aesthetically pleasing, light scent – firm flesh. the gods of smoke must have kissed these fish very lightly.

just enough salt to make the fish sparkle. olive oil super clean.

    right on — delicious tin.

I was pleasantly surprised with this Matiz tin – the level of smokiness is just perfect for these pichards. For example, many of the Latvian smoked sprats are a bit too intense for my taste. The Matiz is toned down enough to be noticeable but the fish still takes center stage.
After sampling several of these smoked tins they have earned a permanent spot in my daily driver rotation whenever I want something smoked.

I love the smokiness of this sardine. Try them on a salad or with salad. you will not be disappointed.

A pretty good tin of fish! Shiny and plump, with a smoky flavor I really enjoyed. Certainly no complaints on my behalf – a delicious standard pilchard, with a little bit of extra oomph.

These were some solid fish, by which I mean they were not overly smokey or dry, just right. They are a good addition to herbed cheese spread and crackers, maybe a little dill.
