Fish: Moderate-firm filet, more soft than hard. Similar to Nuri in mouthfeel, slightly chewy, slightly dry.
Oil: Organic olive oil seems high quality but very clean, very taste neutral. I was surprised by the subtle flavor and fragrance on the oil as I tend to look for more floral notes. If you like a very clean finish to your bite, you’re in good shape. If you prefer a bold oil with lots of complexity or added flavors, you might be less than thrilled.
My take: At almost double the cost of even Nuri, I have to say I was slightly underwhelmed. It’s a lovely sardine with great presentation, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. Were money no object, I’d probably buy it again. But frankly there are sardines I like significantly more at way, way less price point pain, so there’s just no reason for me to choose this. (Mina Sardines, my everyday choice, are currently about $30 for a 12-pack, and I think both the fish and the oil beat this Minerva tin which costs four times more. Just one man’s opinion, of course.) That said, this Minerva tin is a high quality, premium sardine choice that will please most everyone if you choose to go “top shelf.”
