See what Matthew Carlson has to say about spiced Nuri.

The terms “spiced” and “spicy” are used pretty much interchangeably in the tinned fish world, to mean two different things: with a hot pepper (or hot pepper flavor), and with cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper. There are many examples of both terms being used to mean both things.

We are so frustrated by how widespread this confusing inconsistent usage is that we’ve gone through our entire product line to correct the incorrect ones such that our description of “spiced” or “spicy” will always indicate which it really is, regardless of the packaging. “Spicy” = with hot pepper flavor. “Spiced” = with the cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper flavors.

So yummy! A great everyday sardine. I ate mine over toast with a fried egg, and it was delicious. Not too fishy, not too spicy. Perfect.

  2. jfeyes (verified owner)

Certainly one of my top tin of deenz! My first Nuri experience and hopefully of many more !!!!!!

  3. Jeff (verified owner)

You don’t need to know Nuri’s history, how they are still made in a family-like setting in a traditional manner, and that they’re ranked well as a top tin in the world, to know that you just had a special tin of fish when you finish your last bite of these delicious and perfectly spiced sardines.
This is the tin that convinced me to start trying tins of seasoned fish, having previously focused on simple oil and salt varieties, with the idea that I could always do better in adding my own seasoning and condiments than what anyone could put in a tin. It turns out that Nuri could do it far better than I ever could. Great texture, great flavor, consistent quality – you can’t ask for more, but you get it in the history and tradition that comes in every tin.
Nuri spiced sardines can serve as both a special occasion treat and as daily driver tin. If you buy a tin of these, the only regret you may have is that you didn’t buy more than one.

    Great tin of deenz!

These were flavorful without being overly fishy. The heat was nice, a little spice but not much. Good chili flavor and well salted. The fish were plump and firm, about 5 in the tin. The pickled veg was mushy though, and not worth eating in my opinion. But thats ok, Im really just here for the fish. I had these with triscuits. The crackers were on the salty side to pair with these sardines, still delicious though. I feel like this is going to be a trustworthy “fall-back” tin for me. Definitely going to become a staple in my pantry.

  5. Patrick Hachey (verified owner)

This was the first can I knew I had to try on my first order. The flavor is excellent; they’re nicely salty and the slight spice creeps up as a really nice aftertaste. Texturally they are firm, however they are only slightly dry. Granted, I would prefer that to being overly mushy, but I think its worth noting. Ultimately has me looking forward to more spice!

  6. Jonathan (verified owner)

Worth the hype. Will buy again. Will eat again. Will enjoy again.

  7. Max Davis (verified owner)

This is my benchmark tin of sardines, I’ve probably eaten 15 or 20 over the years.

Great sardine, flavorful, good texture, not overly fishy. Good oil. A bit of spice.

Whenever I try a new can of sardines (especially one that’s >$6) I’m partly asking myself “would I rather be eating Nuri Spiced in Olive Oil?”

  8. haziago (verified owner)

If you’re going to start with tinned sardines, or just want to try something better than your usual grocery store ones, get these. The price point to quality ratio is outstanding with Nuri and from now on you will know what quality you should be looking for. If you’re a traveled sardine fan and haven’t tried Nuri then try them now. I can now see why they have a following and are a staple for many.

Great minimally fishy flavor, firm texture, great looking, and if you are worried about too spicy then these aren’t anything to worry about.

  9. Jacob Rosch (verified owner)

A great can of fish! Like other said it’s not too fishy or over poweringly spicy, but there’s lots of great flavor. I ate it with crackers, olives, and some nice bread to soak up the delicious oil.

  10. Matt Garlick (verified owner)

These were delicious! Just the right amount of spice, great texture and great flavor. Will definitely be ordering more soon!

  11. nrobinson (verified owner)

Flavor is salty and overly warm spiced upon first bite. As you eat it all the flavors meld for a really interesting journey. Heat level on this tin was pretty hot, although I imagine it varies based on the individual pepper. Texture varied based on size of fish. Smaller ones were more creamy and larger ones a touch dry. Overall a really nice tin. Very heterogeneous overall in flavor and texture… like a symphony. Over hyped? Maybe… But a really good tin.

  12. Jason Abercrombie (verified owner)

Easily one of my absolute favorite deenz! The consistancy is is perfection, firm yet soft. The olive oil is of high quality, and the level of spice is a light/medium level as to tingle the taste buds of those who only want a subtle nuance rather than a full mouth feel of burn. I would highly recommend these to anyone, seasoned deen lovers or someone exploring a fine new delicasy!

  13. Matt (verified owner)

Great tin! Just the right amount of spice and the texture was perfect.

  14. Gabriel Siciliano (verified owner)

Absolutely delectable. Some of the best sardines in oil I’ve ever had. The fish flakes easily with a sardine fork but still had a toothsome bite, and the spices added not just heat but a number of delicate undertones that flavored the oil, which was delicious drizzled on some roasted brussels sprouts from my farm. The carrot under the fish was a nice little finishing bite for this delicious tin.

  15. rmm59 (verified owner)

Delicious! Was pleasantly surprised by the bold flavors, and the olive oil helped to bring out their natural taste. The texture was also perfect. Overall, a great option for those looking to explore the world of tinned fish and add some variety to their pantry.

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  16. Lawrence Kalinowski (verified owner)

is there anything new I can add to the discussion?

3 meaty, moist, toothsome fillets. the fish is extremely satisfying, very clean, melts in your mouth. the aromatic spice blend was mild & exotic to my palate, very appealing; the taste follows the nose. My first experience with the brand, I ate the fish with sourdough bread and ended up slicing more bread to sop the olive oil. ate everything incl. piri-piri & clove – cleaned the tin.

    so darn good

  17. jgittens374 (verified owner)

These are my favorite sardines that I’ve had so far. The fish is plump, tender (but not soft), and delicious. The olive oil is so tasty. Not spicy, but have a hint of heat and very flavorful. I just love them.

  18. Anne Martin (verified owner)

I am working my way through the spiced sardine options. This one gets a lot of love everywhere so I added it to the order.

There were four larger sized sardines in the tin, along with a slice of pickle, slice of carrot, part of a bay leaf and a hot pepper. There was some innards that dangled from the sardines when they broke but the flavor was fine and the fish were firm enough. The flavor was mild overall.

I will say that these were fine but I will not seek them out again. I prefer the Flower brand of spiced sardines still, though I have a few more tins coming. Their flavor is stronger overall.

  19. Joe Warren (verified owner)

Second venture into Nuri. Was surprised when I opened them at how dark the skin is, and even moreso at how bloated they seemed.

Decent firmness but the skin was quite flaky. The flesh reminded me of salmon in pigment, consistency and flavor. The outer scales were a bit sharp. There was a lingering residual pepper flare, mostly present in heat. The flavor isn’t hot whatsoever but finishes with a dry heat almost reminiscent of a dry rub. A fun change from the traditional, with a pepper, pickle and carrot awaiting at the bottom of the tin. Spice up your routine with something a little different!

  20. Minatogawa Man (verified owner)

Excellent spiced sardines..almost perfect balance between fish and flavorings. They retain the virtues of the plain olive oil Nuri’s but add a little kick. On the other hand, we’d be hard-pressed to rate them above the plain Nuri’s, which we found to be at their best unadorned on rice or toast.

  21. Lily (verified owner)

Wow! These are incredible. Very clearly high quality fish and olive oil. I usually add some hot sauce or Espinalar sauce to sardines, but these didn’t need any extra flavor. The pickle, carrot, and hot pepper in the tin were a nice touch. There is more depth of flavor in these than in other brands I’ve tried. I had them plain out of the can, but they would be fantastic with some crusty bread.

  22. Betty Chu (verified owner)

I was curious about whether these would live up to the hype, and after sharing a tin with some friends and with lots of good bread in hand, I’m happy to say that they do! These sardines are not the least bit fishy, and they were plump and moist. The spices are fairly mild and pleasant, just enough to add complexity but not too overpowering. The fish is the star. That oil was pretty darn tasty on the bread. This is a pantry staple.

  23. Katherine Bennett (verified owner)

So delicious. Wonderful flavor and texture. Top tier deens!

  24. Peter Kupchick (verified owner)

By far my favorite sardine so far. Tender! Perfectly seasoned! Spectacular and will certainly be buying again.

  25. nrbolt (verified owner)

After receiving my first box from Rainbow Tomatoes Garden this was the first can I peeled open to taste. I’d say it was pretty low on a spiciness scale, but that’s probably why Nuri makes a more spicy version. The dines were just slightly on the drier side but held together very well. I probably did this can a disservice by not pairing it with anything other than some Espinaler Sauce, which added a lot to the party, but I think a good piece of buttered bread, and a bit of flaky salt would taste pretty good with these. Is it top-tier dine? For me… Not yet, solid 3 out of 5. Definitely will try again.

  26. Hream McDan (verified owner)

How did it take me so long to try these? Simply great. Giant, giant meaty sardines with beautiful texture and moisture. Super satisfying from the first bite to the last. Was interested to see if they really were the same as my favorite Mabuti in spiced oil – the main difference here is size and texture, but very similar on flavor (and that’s a great thing). Absolutely will rebuy these … they’re just a nearly perfect tin that everyone should try at least once.

  27. Sarah (verified owner)

Will add to the chorus- freaking delicious. Has the umami bomb flavor of great tinned fish (could swear it had MSG!). Stretched my one tin out over three sittings and was sad when it ended- after I drank the oil…

  28. An Nguyen (verified owner)

This tin is a classic for a reason–there’s probably not much I can add here that hasn’t already been said. I really loved the big, hunky sardines draped in the mildly spicy olive oil. This will be the default sardines for my stash, for sure.

  29. Mike Turpie (verified owner)

We have a winner! These lived up to the hype. My third attempt at sardines, and the first that I enjoyed with no reservations. Less pretty than some, with damaged skin, but oh so delicious. This tin smelled great on opening, without excessive fishiness. Pleasantly spicy, very flavorful oil. I loved the little treats of carrot, piri piri, and pickle. It seems weird to me that cloves would be there with the rest of these, but they added to the complexity in a great way. I enjoyed on lightly toasted artisan sourdough with butter. I’m not sure if the butter was necessary considering the oil, but it didn’t hurt. Can’t wait to try the extra spiced version.

  30. Benjamin Wedepohl (verified owner)

These are fantastic. Immediately, the oil is clearly high quality, and the fish are packed very nice. The flavor is nothing special, just really good sardines in high quality oil with some spice to them. The spice level could be a little much if eaten alone, but atop some toast or bread, it makes for a wonderful lunch. I added a couple capers atop to bring a little bit of vinegar/saltiness, and it worked wonderfully.

  31. mollyirisalpern (verified owner)

A delightful can of sardines that is absolutely worth its reputation. I had these atop some crusty sourdough bread slathered with salty butter and the combination was perfect. I loved the slight spice that pleasantly grew as I worked my way through the tin, never getting “spicy” but just providing a nice heat. The three fat sardines were meaty but tender, easy to flake apart to scatter across the toast and robust enough to stay in the large pieces I broke them into. Plenty rich, a squeeze of lemon or bit of pickled something-or-other would’ve given a nice contrast, but the salt level was well-balanced atop the buttered bread. I’ll use the leftover oil to make a salad dressing, giving me another opportunity to enjoy the spiced flavors infused in the tin. Overall, very enjoyable and definitely something I’d recommend!

  32. neilseim12 (verified owner)

A little salty, a little spicy, but overall just fantastic. These are probably my favorite sardines so far and I highly recommend them to anyone who enjoys canned fish.

  33. Yousif Al-amin (verified owner)

Really incredible flavor in this tin of sardines. The fish are meaty yet tender and very rich in flavor. They’re packed in a delicious oil that is lightly spiced and ever so slightly spicy, just the right amount of heat to elevate the flavor. They flake apart nicely, I enjoyed them with some fresh raw veggies but will consider toast for next time. No strange aftertaste and no single flavor overwhelms any of the others. I don’t know what else to add that hasn’t been said, it’s clear why they’re a favorite in the tin fish world when you try these. Will definitely be back for more!

  34. brittanycampbell5711056404 (verified owner)

this is one of the best tins i have tried so far. i received this in the surprise me box and really did not expect to like sardines, but the flavor and texture of this tin fish is absolutely amazing. i ate it with just some pieces of a toasted baguette and a little bit of butter and it was delicious

  35. randymatteson427 (verified owner)

I watched the Nuri factory video and could not resist trying their lineup. Once they arrived, I immediately felt an appreciation for their packaging. When I peeled back that first piece of tape, I remember the worker showing us her method of quickly applying it by hand. The artwork is cool and for some reason I like the tin being ‘upside down’ as it stored. This was my first taste of a spiced sardine, I didn’t really know what to expect with the clove in there. I was so thrilled with the first bite straight from the tin! The spice flavor, fish texture and silky olive oil is a great combination and overall experience. Saving the artsy wax paper for a future project. 5/5

  36. luke (verified owner)

These are perfect and need no accompaniment. Just dump the tin over some extra crispy toast and enjoy. Great texture and a perfect balance of acid and fat. Though I like them alone, they are fabulous in a salad or over rice. If you must tinker with it somehow, I suggest just a few drops of red wine vinegar.

  37. TinnedFishStoner (verified owner)

As someone who grew up eating tinned fish, these are a whole other level. The flavor is immaculate, and every bite is all of these beautiful flavors combined with the texture of the fish. I also really love that Nuri leaves the other little ingredients in there that the flavors of the fish, spices and oil just melt into. It’s definitely worth getting, I even made my mom try a piece of Nuri sardines and she said it would be amazing over some white rice.

  38. Albert Schmidt (verified owner)

Plenty has been said about Nuri Spiced Sardines, and they live up to that hype. These were fantastic. I’m new to tinned fish, and of what I have tried, these were the best experience so far. The fish were firm and slightly spiced (a bit mild for me tbh.) The fish flavor was so much more satisfying than other sardine brands I’ve tried. No canned tuna aftertaste here! My wife even liked them, which is high praise coming from her.

  39. Emma Armstrong (verified owner)

My first time trying Nuri products and this one was great! Large sardines with a small sense of a kick (very light and complimentary). Ate the whole tin in record time with some crackers. Added a few drops of lemon juice too, which added a little brightness.

  40. jslaton009 (verified owner)

    Excellent sardine and great value.

The meat has a fantastic texture and the quality of the oil can immediately be tasted. Spice flavors balance it out nicely but remain in the background to the fish.

Will continue to buy, one of the best spiced at this price point

  41. Mattie Ewald (verified owner)

The sauce in this is absolutely fantastic, I just had this on some foccacia but I wish I had put this on a thinner, crustier bread with some guacamole and fresh red onion. Very tender but the fishiness flavor was a little stronger than others, I quite enjoyed that, though.

  42. Elizabeth Harmony (verified owner)

These are pretty good sardines. The batch I got was firm fleshed, no scales, and held together when I took them out of the can. The spices were pleasant, but not overpowering. I had mine with some crackers and olives on the side, with a few home pickled onions to switch things up, and a small piece epoisse I happened to need to finish off . Overall I enjoyed these sardines, and would purchase again for my “quick lunch” collection.

  43. Reann Heintz (verified owner)

This was my first time ever trying tinned fish, and it was pretty good! I’d been wanting to ever since it blew up on Tiktok and thought hey, this tin is super popular, so it’s probably a good place to start. It was good, I paired it with Ritz crackers because I liked smoked salmon on them so I thought a similar effect would work with the sardines. My only qualm is that I wish it was spicier, but next time I will just get the 3x spicy. Anyhow, very good stuff.

  44. Irina Liu (verified owner)

So yummy, and a cult classic for a reason! Definitely a bit of a gateway tin – once I tried this, it opened up the world of tinned fish for me and everyone who tried it with me. The fish were firm and flaky, but had enough structural integrity that I could easily lift if out of the tin with a pair of chopsticks.

One thing to note is that these sardines are “spiced” in the sense that they have a piri piri pepper in the tin, but are not necessarily “spicy.” For someone looking for more spice, Nuri also offers an extra spicy version of this tin with three peppers instead of one.

  45. newsletteracct (verified owner)

These are a classic for a reason – an awesome price point, great quality, and a fantastically versatile flavor. These are great in almost any preparation but I love them in a sandwich with some flatbread and tomato & eggplant spread.

  46. Joseph Egan (verified owner)

These are great! They’re not too spicy but just enough of a kick to notice it. I started by eating them on a baguette but I was enjoying them so much I just went straight out of the can. Like everyone else is saying, these are my new benchmark for comparison when it comes to sardines.

  47. Keith Meyers (verified owner)

SO juicy, flavorful, and delicious. Absolutely a staple for any tinned fish lover

  48. Ben (verified owner)

This was a wonderful tin of sardines. The oil to fish ratio was perfect to have a little extra oil at the end to soak up with a cracker. The spicy addition was present but not overbearing. The fish were well handled and tender.

  49. newsletteracct (verified owner)

A classic for a reason – this tin deserves all of its hype. Great quality and amazing flavor that is also versatile for as many preparations as your heart desires. My favorite has been as a sandwich on flatbread with cucumber, lemon, and tomato eggplant spread.

  50. Aaron Cruz (verified owner)

This Nuri sardine tin is very good. Should definitely be a recurring tin in your pantry. I actually had them for breakfast with a fried egg and corn grits – and a side of fruit. Delicious!

  51. SK (verified owner)

I ordered this tin because of its reputation and the sardines had a great spices smell and a good kick while not being overpowering. I ate these on toasted jalapeño cheese bread and while they were plump and firm, they tasted quite dry, especially in combo with the bread. Perhaps next time I will try a sauce or spread or just try the sardines with a different accompaniment.

  52. Andrew Tolston (verified owner)

Having recently experienced Nuri sardines in spiced oil, I was genuinely impressed by the exceptional taste. The infusion of spiced oil provided a delightful kick that beautifully enhanced the already rich flavor of the sardines. The texture was perfectly balanced, avoiding the extremes of being overly mushy or excessively firm. The packaging proved to be convenient, ensuring a hassle-free opening and a delightful culinary experience. This seems like an excellent entry point into spiced sardines!

  53. Larissa (verified owner)

Extremely high quality, delicious sardines, and on the low end in pricing for higher end tinned fish. Absolutely a gateway tin to the world of exceptional canned fish. I got these in my first surprise box courtesy of Dan, and they were absolutely delicious on toast with a bit of mayo, onion, and greens with a drizzle of lemon juice on top.

  54. Wesley Paris (verified owner)

To the contrary of the other reviews, I did not enjoy the can that much. I felt that the sardines had a very strong taste of cloves, which blocked out the taste of the other things. The sardines were as firm as they get, and you can tell the quality of both the fish and the ingredients. Unfortunately, for me, the overpowering flavor of the cloves made the sardines less appealing.

  55. Connor Johnson (verified owner)

If you’re shopping on RTG then you’ve probably already tried these or you’re about to add them to your cart. They are popular for good reason. High quality sardines seasoned with peppers, clove, and other ingredients. They are a must try for anyone new to tinned fish.

  56. David Horie (verified owner)

Alight, i get it now, these really are wonderful. Compared to the Fangst Sprat no. 4(or any other clove spiced fish) the clove really doesn’t overpower the other flavors; Not too spicy, was well seasoned(didnt need salt) and you can still really taste the fish. We ate these on crackers with lemon but honestly they did just fine on their own too. High quality, and for the price these seem like a no-brainer. I’m glad they got included with “my suprise” me box.

  57. TJ Burke (verified owner)

Very tasty. Larger fish than Bela. About three fish per can. The fish flavor really comes through over the olive oil and spices. Very nice on crackers with Espinaler and pickle.

  58. StinkHound (verified owner)

    The ubiquitous Nuri Spiced sardines.

I have left another review on the Nuri sardines in olive oil, but the gist was that I have never ben of fan of the bigger sardines and Nuri turned me on to the lager sizes.

Basically, I found the olive oil sardines excellent and I was excited to try the Spiced sardines. My can had three sardines, with a wonderful clean fish flavor and nice olive oil. What was interesting was the spiced flavor. I was expecting a spicy heat, probably due tot he pepper image in the packaging, but it was not there. Instead, there was a “spiced” flavor; not hot but very flavorful and enjoyable. I think these are a better overall tin to the Nuri in olive oil, if only because they are more interesting.

Do not hesitate to get either tins.

  59. traceydjohnson1 (verified owner)

Very good. Not too fishy. Pretty spicy for me but I am sensitive to spice. I ate with toasted bread and a squeeze of lemon and it was perfect. The oil was very good too, be sure to dip your bread in it.

  60. Jacky Wong (verified owner)

A very solid tin of sardines, worthy of its praise in the community. They have just the right amount of spice to make the flavor interesting without overpowering. There’s a bit of nice sweetness as well. The sardines themselves are just a bit softer than I’d like but have excellent texture overall. The smell isn’t overpowering either. Goes well with my usual bed of rice.

  61. nfwsletters (verified owner)

Nuri is a good tin, but for those who enter the tinned fish world through social media, don’t hype this one up too much in your mind. It may not live up to its reputation, although it is certainly good. I got 3 thick, shiny sardines in my can, and I could pick them up with chopsticks as intact pieces of fish. Salty but not overpowering, with strong herbal spices. It’s a solid spiced sardine!

  62. kyelmoore (verified owner)

Wow, ok. I totally get the hype. Holy cow these were good.

I thought sprats would be my ideal introduction to sardines, but I was totally mistaken. I’ve had some fire sprats. The Pena’s in spicy olive oil. The Fangst smoked with heather and chamomile. Both very good, but WOW these Nuris were next level.

Wonderful texture on these. These are meaty fish, but with just the right flaky fall aparty-ness. For the bone-averse crowd, these bones were undetectable.

The flavor is out of this world. I am not really equipped to describe the taste other than really phenomenal. You’re definitely eating fish, but there’s no overt fishiness, if that makes sense. Beautifully spiced, really delicious.

My experience has been people recommending sprats as part of a sea-cuterie board for beginners, but wow, this has totally rocked my world. If you have friends who are hesitant to try a deen, start them off with one of these for sure. They are more than worth the hype, and I think even the most deen-averse would fall in love at first bite. The hype is freakin real. Cannot recommend these enough, wow.

  63. hannahldodge (verified owner)

Don’t know what I could add besides agreeing that these are worth the hype. A little spicy, great flavor, great fish. I also ended up really loving the little vegetable slices, they soak up the sauce flavor so well!

  64. Nik Hamilton (verified owner)

These were delicious and I will be a regular in our house. I love that I can eat these straight from the tin, with nothing added. The texture and flavor are just right for me and the delicate spice worked. Having these with crispy sourdough, cream cheese and pickled onions is my favorite way to eat these and I could easily eat a whole tin in one sitting. Would definitely recommend these. One note is that these tins are a challenge to open for me and I’ll probably start using a can opener :). Enjoy.

  65. Ian Tuten (verified owner)

These were something truly special. The spice is there, but it’s a warming, comforting spice, on sardines that are plump and toothy. Absolutely wonderful.

  66. an.heetae (verified owner)

I finally understand the hype. So tender so flavorful that I could eat this every day. Perfectly spiced to be good with everything! Would order an entire box of these tins because they are my new favorite.

  67. Jad Said (verified owner)

Before trying these, all I ever heard was great things and how many said that this was their favorite tin. I completely understand why after trying them and will probably add at least one tin if not two any time I’m making a new order! These are especially great for first time sardine explorers!

  68. Andrew Fuerte (verified owner)

Oil in this tin has tons of flavor. Took oil and put it in a hot pan, and made some toast to eat with the sardines. Loved the pickled veggies in the tin as well
