This tin is delightful – firm-textured smoked skin-on mackerel filets with a well-balanced salty, sweet, and smoky flavor – that just hits the spot. I tried a couple of bites straight out of the tin and was surprised at how balanced the flavors are – not too smokey, just a touch sweet, not too salty, with a mild fishy note. Sometimes smoked fish is all smoke or too salty and the fish is just fully drowned out. I tried a couple bites straight from the tin, and then ate them atop a bowl of warm rice with some pickled and fermented veggies on the side – this was just about perfect.

4.5⭐️/5⭐️
My husband has loved every tin he’s tried from this brand and this was no exception. Perfect balance of smoke, sweetness, and salt. He ate it with steamed rice, little hot sauce, and some kimchi on the side. Delish!

Opened the tin to find two beautiful dark mackerel fillets. Not too smokey and not too dry. I ate the fish over some rice with kewpie mayo, Japanese bbq sauce and chili crisp which made for a delicious lunch. Really really tasty mackerel, maybe my favorite tin of mackerel I’ve tried so far!

A beautiful marriage of slightly sweet and slightly smoked flavors. Texture was perfect, firmness on the strong side of medium that still had great moisture and flake – I’m not sure texture could get any better for this type of tin. Not too salty, not too sweet. Even still has the skin intact on both pieces of mackerel.
It was very, very good straight from the tin but would be even better over rice or on a bagel with cream cheese. It evokes memories of the (significantly more expensive) Gulf of Maine Conservas smoked eel tin, I say it’s a very positive comparison for a lot less money. This is very much another winner for Ocean’s and I’m not sure that it could get any better than this for sweet smoked mackerel.

I ate this fish straight from the tin. This is a wonderful fish product and I will buy this product again. the smoky sweet flavor is something that I wave never experienced before.

Big solid pieces of fish. Super firm. I put both pieces between bread and ate it as a sandwich. Good flavor but definitely needs an accompaniment to battle the dryness.

Two pieces were inside the tin, one smaller and quite skinny and the other one larger and taking up most of the tin. As I’m uncomfortable still with skin, it was easily peeled off. The fish had a mild flavor, well balanced, with nothing overpowering another. The non skin side was more chewy and the rest was very very soft… I wouldn’t say mushy but it was very soft. I couldn’t decide if I liked the texture or not. The flavor was okay for me, I would eat it again if it was in front of me but I’m not sure if I would go out of my way to seek it out. I prefer the other Ocean’s tins over this one but overall, this wasn’t the worst tin I’ve ever had… Neither was it the best. It was just alright.

Good tin overall. Nice and firm, juicy. Good smoke flavor. The skin brings some good fat content. One of my favorite tins of mackerel, although I think I like the juniper and coriander flavor from the same brand slightly more. Would buy again!

Absolutely delicious, and at a great price! My tin had two large filets that were meaty but firmer and dryer than some of the other mackerel I’ve had in the past, almost leaning towards a fatty fish jerky. I personally didn’t mind the texture because the flavors were so spot on. They weren’t too sweet – the overall flavor was deep umami, salty and savory, with just enough sweetness to cut some of the saltiness and balance the tin.
