Our Atlantic Mackerel is packed with roasted garlic and silky extra-virgin olive oil. Meaty, savory, and mild, it’s great straight from the can on toast, or added to pastas and salads.

The seasonings are on the bottom, so flip the open can onto a plate to allow them to flow evenly over the fish.

Each can contains 4.2 oz; fully cooked.

Atlantic mackerel is the small fish with the mild flavor and big, meaty texture of a large fish. But there are many other reasons to give it a try. Unlike large apex predators like tuna and swordfish, these mackerel are small, schooling fish that occur in great abundance, providing a truly sustainable harvest. They’re caught by hook and line, with little to no bycatch, by traditional fishing families in northern Spain. Since Atlantic mackerel are low on the ocean food chain, they don’t have the high levels of mercury and other toxins that can concentrate in larger fish. And they are an excellent source of protein, vitamin B-12, and other essential nutrients, with 500 mg of Omega 3 fatty acids per serving.

    I ate this over rice. Three nice size pieces, good amount of small garlic pieces mixed in with the oil. It didn’t smell fishy, only had a slight smell (not a bad smell, just a very light smell) when I put my nose close to it. It all tasted very mild. I imagine it would be much better with a more exciting accompaniment / additional add-ins, it was a bit plain with just the white rice. However, it did make an easy and convenient meal for a lazy lunch.

    I found this tin to be good, but it’s not my favorite mackerel. That title is still held by Good Boy Horse Mackerel Fillets in Olive Oil with Garlic and Parsley. I loved that Good Boy tin so much it made me want to try other mackerel and horse mackerel tins with garlic when I ran out of it and had trouble restocking. This Patagonia tin unfortunately didn’t quite hit the mark for me. Tad bit fishier than I prefer and not as much garlic/oil flavor absorbed into the fillets as I was hoping for. It would be a good tin to eat with something else, but not my favorite for plain on a Wasa crisp like I was doing with the Good Boy tins. To Patagonia’s credit, I did prefer this tin over the BELA Mackerel in Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil that I initially tried after I ran out of Good Boy.

    The fish in this tin is really tender and mild; I like that it was boneless and skinless which made it more accessible to uninitiated tinned fish eaters. If anything I did feel that the flavour of the oil overwhelmed the fish quite a bit and that it would need additional seasoning to make it really enjoyable.

    The roasted garlic flavor here is a wonnnnderfully accurate taste that is delicate yet noticeable. They absolutely, absolutely nailed this flavor without the garlic being overwhelming in any way. Texturally, Patagonia mackerel is quite unique due to the chewy/spongy fillets. They don’t really flake apart as much as they … bend … apart? Why is the texture so different? I don’t know but ultimately, I don’t mind it here because (1) the roasted garlic flavor is excellent, and (2) moisture levels are very good. If you’ve tried very many mackerel tins, you’ll know that dry mackerel is the absolute worst mackerel – you don’t any dryness here. I bet this would be one heck of a sandwich ingredient and you’d probably not notice the spongy texture as much as if you ate it straight from the tin (as I do). Patagonia is not my favorite brand of mackerel – King Oscar & Ocean’s rank higher for me – but I definitely don’t think there’s a better ** garlic’d mackerel ** than this.

    There seem to be some mixed reviews on this one. For me? I like it. I’m still trying to figure out why I like it – but I DO like it. I shook the tin a few times to spread the garlic around but I doubt that did much of anything. It has a pleasant garlicky aroma once opened – not as strong as I was expecting. The fish itself was tasty, although I do agree with one of the other reviewers about the texture. It was very firm (or spongy) and didn’t want to flake. I ended up adding some hot pepper powder to my tin and enjoyed the remainder of my snack. I need another garlic infused tin to compare it to. For now, I’ll stick with “I like it” as my official review.

    This is a solid tin of mackerel – not one that immediately blew my socks off but the quality of the fish is great and the garlic flavor is delicious. This was perfect on a salad using the oil to make a dressing.
