Patagonia Provisions Smoked Mackerel in Olive Oil

$8.00

Nothing highlights the delicate flavor of wild Atlantic Mackerel like our simple, savory blend of extra-virgin olive oil, salt and bay wood smoke. Add to pasta and salads, or eat straight from the can with crusty sourdough, using the silky-smooth olive oil as a dipping sauce.

Atlantic mackerel is the small fish with the mild flavor and big, meaty texture of a large fish. But there are many other reasons to give it a try. Unlike large apex predators like tuna and swordfish, these mackerel are small, schooling fish that occur in great abundance, providing a truly sustainable harvest. They’re caught by hook and line, with little to no bycatch, by traditional fishing families in northern Spain. Since Atlantic mackerel are low on the ocean food chain, they don’t have the high levels of mercury and other toxins that can concentrate in larger fish. And they are an excellent source of protein, vitamin B-12, and other essential nutrients, with 500 mg of Omega 3 fatty acids per serving.

Each can contains 4.2 oz; fully cooked.

Very good level of smoke flavor. The smoke itself has a unique flavor I do not have a word for, but I recommend. The fish was tender but held together well and seemed to have been handled well. One of the better smoked mackerel I’ve had.

Beautiful smoky flavor, excellent moisture, interesting texture. It is slightly chewy as I’d heard – it doesn’t flake apart much in the tin nor in your mouth. But the flavor is *really* good and makes up for it. I’d call this level of smoke ‘medium’ and the seasoning is great, no salt needed. I did try some Espinaler (no benefit) and Tabasco (small +0.25 improvement) for fun, but ended up just enjoying this on its own. Despite the slightly odd texture, this is the best tasting plain mackerel I’ve found. It’s 100% worth it and will be a regular tin for me.

We tried three mackerels today. This one was not enjoyed by either of us. We each had a bite and that was all we wanted to try. Strange almost chemical taste, I’m guessing from the smoking. Though we hardly noticed any smoke flavor. I really think something was off with this batch as I’ve had plenty of cheaper grocery brands that were amazing in comparison. I was looking forward to upgrading to this one for my smoked mackerel salads. 1/5 *
