Patagonia Provisions Spanish Paprika Mackerel

$8.00

Our Atlantic Mackerel is seasoned with a slow-cooked blend of onion, red bell pepper, garlic and paprika, and packed in extra-virgin olive oil. Rich and mellow, with a hint of heat, it’s a great pantry staple for adding to pasta and salads.
The seasonings are on the bottom, so flip the open can onto a plate to allow them to flow evenly over the fish.

Each can contains 4.2 oz; fully cooked.

Pictured on braised fennel and carrots.

Atlantic mackerel is the small fish with the mild flavor and big, meaty texture of a large fish. But there are many other reasons to give it a try. Unlike large apex predators like tuna and swordfish, these mackerel are small, schooling fish that occur in great abundance, providing a truly sustainable harvest. They’re caught by hook and line, with little to no bycatch, by traditional fishing families in northern Spain. Since Atlantic mackerel are low on the ocean food chain, they don’t have the high levels of mercury and other toxins that can concentrate in larger fish. And they are an excellent source of protein, vitamin B-12, and other essential nutrients, with 500 mg of Omega 3 fatty acids per serving.

The Patagonia Provisions Guarantee (which we fully endorse and support):

We understand that fixing the broken food chain means sourcing ingredients that are grown, raised and harvested using methods that are friendly to our home planet.

But it doesn’t work if the foods we create aren’t mouth-wateringly, plate-lickingly delicious. That’s why we work with our favorite chefs to create foods that we love to eat and share.

If you ever order Provisions and aren’t 100% satisfied, we will happily refund you in full. In other words, we’re proud to stand by the flavor, nutrition, sourcing and quality of everything we make.

This is my second time having mackerel. I ate it with some tomatoes and eggs, just poured the whole tin in the pan and heated it up with the tomatoes for a bit. It seemed like too much oil so I was worried but once I added the eggs, it seemed fine.

The fish itself were large pieces, good size with no smell. The texture was a bit firm and had a good chew. The flavor was nice and mild. My only disappointment was the additions / flavorings. The oil had was redddish, I assume from the paprika, and I could see pieces of pepper and onion, but I couldn’t taste these. I would have liked more flavoring from it as if I had my eyes closed and didn’t know what I was eating, I might have said it was just in plain olive oil.

The overall meal was easy to make, filling and did taste okay but it didn’t blow my socks off. I’d eat it again if I had it laying around but not sure if I’ll go out of my way to buy again.

I am partial to all of the Patagonia seafood products; however, the Spanish Paprika Mackerel is my absolute favorite. I eat it every week, and until now had only been sourcing from their website. It is delicious by itself, with crackers, over a bowl of barley, the list could go on. There is a whopping serving of nutrients in each of these cans, you can go wrong, give them a try.

Mackerel is my favorite tinned fish. So I enjoy trying different varieties and brands (so much to explore!). This was great, the paprika gave these a added depth of flavor which I didn’t pick up on at first but, after a few bites, really started to notice. There small pieces of red pepper and onion which didn’t taste like much but I suspect added to the flavor profile overall. Excellent and will keep this one in rotation.

I enjoyed this tin quite a bit – the texture was tender and nice, it was well packed. The spices in this are mild, just the lightest flavoring and no heat. I don’t think this will make it into my regular rotation over the Nuri spiced mackerel, but if you like your tins to be mild and have a gentle flavor rather than a spicy kick, this would be *perfect*.

I’m definitely impressed by the care used to pack this tin, mine was very nicely put together. It’s a high quality tin of fish, I just like a little more heat and spice in mine.

Great flavors, a very yummy and high quality tin of mackerel! The pieces were large, firm, and packed tightly. They were well-spiced but not spicy, and all of the flavors were very balanced.

Upon opening this tin, I noticed how beautifully bright red/orange the oil was. The red pieces of bell pepper and onion were soft and delicious and a great complement to the dish. Overall, the flavor was warm but mild and the mackerel was really firm; I didn’t love the texture. Not my favorite but not bad!

Another fine tin from Patagonia, with a lot more sauce + fixins than I expected to find. Moisture was above average (as you’d expect) and the Patagonia bouncy-chew wasn’t as noticeable here as it sometimes is. Flavor was mild and not overwhelmingly paprika … more “delightfully paprika.” I’d absolutely get this again -especially on sale- as it was very easy to eat straight out of the tin. The only thing I’d do differently would be to flip the tin upside down into a bowl first so then the little bits were easier to get on each bite.

This tin was tightly packed. There were three fillets of patagonia mackerel, which tends to be meaty, chewy, and more firm than it is flaky. Despite the red color of the oil, the paprika and bell pepper flavorings of this tin were subtle enough that I didn’t really notice them. Even without any noticeable paprika flavor, I found that these fillets were still tasty enough to be enjoyed straight from the tin.

Would recommend for those looking to try delicious mackerel that is subtly flavored and neither spicy nor spiced.
