Pollastrini di Anzio Sardines with Tomato Sauce 4/6

$7.00

A lot of sardine companies are phoning in the tomato sauce, not this Italian company. The addition of celery and spices up this sauce a notch. Let’s face it, the Italians know a thing or two about tomato sauce. You may also know these as Pollastrini al Pomodoro.

100g (3.5 oz) tin

Nice quality, an above average tin for the “sardines in tomato sauce” genre. The fish was more firm than expected -getting closer to canned tuna texture- that walked the line of firm/dry but ultimately avoided dryness. The sauce was thin but much more flavorful than most other sardines in tomato; there is absolutely no ketchup or tomato paste vibe here. Definitely a real tomato sauce that you’ll appreciate, especially if you’ve tried sardines in tomato before.

If you have an aversion to salty tomato sauce, you’ll want to avoid this tin … it’s quite salty but I found that to be in a good way. For example, I absolutely add salt to the Nuri UN-spiced sardines in tomato but I didn’t need to even _think_ about adding salt to this tin.

For me, these Pollastrini hit the “very good” level in the tomato sauce genre. I’d recommend trying them if you like this type of tin. It’s a step up from most other tomato’d sardines, these are generally equivalent to the regular Nuri in tomato but not quite as good as the gold standard – the spiced Nuri in tomato.

I had been reluctant to try sardines in tomato sauce. These changed my mind about that. The sardines were great and the tomato sauce added an extra punch to the fish. I lied the sauce so much that I finished of with some crackers.this is a tin I will try again!

The tomato is thin with a decent amount of oil that helps carry the flavor. The texture of these sardines is always great and not especially delicate but falls apart easily. I tried these side by side with the same in hot pepper and both were almost indistinguishable. I love the branding and artwork of Pollastrini which lead me to trying most of their tins, I am still a fan and the fish is quality but I will likely not purchase again.
