The term “hot” shouldn’t scare you away from these. The heat level is widely considered to be on the mild side. There is some heat present, but it is not going to make you want to go chug milk or anything. Try these tossed with pasta or mixed into rice. Or just eat them straight from the can, we’re not here to judge.

If you’ve tried the Porthos Sardines in Tomato Sauce then you’ve already experienced 95% of what this tin has to offer. Unremarkable quality fish in a watery red tomato sauce that doesn’t do a whole lot to bring any extra flavor to the party. The heat is a welcome addition here, and some bites of this had a spicy kick that hit above many of the other “spicy” tins I’ve sampled. These aren’t bad by any means but they’re nothing to write home about. Several other Portugese producers offer a superior product for the same price.

I warmed these up in a water bath before serving over a bed of simple fried rice with peas. Inspired by the Italian-American dish steak pizzaiola.
Nice firm texture, slightly dry like canned tuna but still fatty and rich. No spice heat whatsoever. Some of the skin was a bit beat up, but no scales. Nice sardine flavor though not too distinctive. The tomato sauce is mediocre… more sweet than acidic. This is my first tin from Porthos and for being a lower-mid priced Portuguese brand, it’s solid. I’ll explore the line some more, but will likely stick to other tomato sauce’d tins.
