Porthos Spiced Sardines in Olive Oil 3/5

$7.00

Spiced, here, means chili pepper (not blazing hot, just enough to let you know it’s a hot pepper, as well as some pickled vegetables and a bit of clove. If you’re looking for a great pair of tins to compare, try these side by side with the Nuri Spiced Sardines in Olive Oil to triangulate your flavor preferences.

Description

Ingredients: sardines, olive oil, chili pepper, cucumber, carrot, pepper seed, clove, natural chili flavoring and salt.

The terms “spiced” and “spicy” are used pretty much interchangeably in the tinned fish world, to mean two different things: with a hot pepper (or hot pepper flavor), and with cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper. There are many examples of both terms being used to mean both things.

We are so frustrated by how widespread this confusing inconsistent usage is that we’ve gone through our entire product line to correct the incorrect ones such that our description of “spiced” or “spicy” will always indicate which it really is, regardless of the packaging. “Spicy” = with hot pepper flavor. “Spiced” = with the cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper flavors.

Very good can of sardines….maybe like the Nuri’s just a smidgen more….tomorrow I may feel differently. I guess I will just keep trying them!

These are for me the best “Portuguese Spiced” sardines. Pickle, clove, carrot, pepper, peppercorn. You can get it from almost every brand. Most folks know it from the Nuri Spiced style.

The Porthos brand is the best. Always consistent. Always delicious. Porthos is your best entry into the Portuguese style, and they also have a delicious teriyaki style.

You can’t go wrong here. This is my number one or number two most purchased, staple brand of spiced sardine. The only other brand I’ve purchased more are Briosa Small Sardinillas in olive oil.

You too need these stockpiled in your pantry so, go get some!

I’ve been eating a lot of the spiced style sardines and these hold up well against the competition (Nuri, Pinhais, Briosa Gourmet). Spice level roughly 1.5 out of 5, plump fish not too firm or mushy, quality oil.

Without doing a side by side comparison, it’s hard to pick a favorite in the spiced category, but you certainly can’t go wrong with these.

Sneakily great! Slightly softer exterior, slightly firmer interior provides a very appealing bite. Seasoning was on point, spicy level was even a little more than I expected (seems like a 2+ out of 5). If you are bothered by a few scales then you probably don’t like Porthos in general … but if you don’t mind, then these rock. Perhaps, perhaps a tiny tiny step behind Nuri spiced but they’re right there nearby alongside Ati Manel’s spiced tin. They’re absolutely worth this price and this tin makes me want to try a LOT more from Porthos.

The fish are huge and delicious as you’d expect from Portugal, a couple of scales here and there but nothing unusual. The oil is delicious, not quite as refined as the Nuri in my opinion but still pleasant and nicely salted / spiced. I think I prefer the Nuri but would have no problem digging into these again.

These are so good! I love how large the sardines were (surprised by this!) and that they had some scales and bones. The quality of the fish is great for the price, but what really makes this tin great is the spice and oil! I ate these straight up, and then used the extra oil from the tin to make a spicy salad dressing. I shared these with my family, who are very new to tinned fish, and the overall consensus was that these were great and a fun tin with some added flavor! I haven’t tried many Porthos tins, but this has swayed me to start looking at their selectin for future sardine tins!

For me, this was a really great tin. Excellent flavor, excellent texture, good presentation. Firm, but not dry. Comparable to Nuri as others have said. I can’t say wether they’re better or worse. I very much look forward to trying other offering from this brand.

Dude – these dines are awesome! The sardines inside were big and swam in that golden olive oil, and the spice wasn’t too crazy, just the right amount of kick. They weren’t greasy, and the scales were minimal. First bite? Yatzi! A mix of savory sardines, rich olive oil, and a hint of spice. It made my taste buds happy. The spice level is just enough to keep things interesting without being toooo spicy. These are delicious, and you won’t regret buying them!
