Porto-Muiños Mussels with Sweet Kombu in Salsa Brava

$16.00

We get very excited for any preparation of mussels that explores territory beyond the tried and true escabeche. Seaweed goes with all the sea meats, and we hope more producers pick up on this.

120g tin

I was really excited to try this tin. Personally, tinned mussels might not be for me (I’m not sure what it is about them), but I did keep going back for this tin. At the very least, the salsa brava was delicious. I toasted extra bread just to dip into the can and soak it up. I’m sure that fans of mussels would really like this one.

A very tasty can of mussels, smashing even at room temp. Served it up to friends when dinner was running a bit late and they all enjoyed them.

I think this might be my favorite tinned mussels. The mussels were so tender and tasty and the sauce is very addicting. I ate mine with some bread, lemon juice, and some thin slices of onion. I also really enjoyed the pieces of kombu inside. Highly recommend. This will be a pantry staple for me!

I tried these on a whim because I wanted to try something with a different sauce. Everything else is escabeche. When I first cracked the tin, my first thought was that the muscles were especially large and plump looking. Then I tried one with the sauce, and fireworks!!! So flavorful. Sweet and complex. I had them alone and on a cracker. I drank the sauce when I was done. Highly recommend. 10/10

We really enjoyed these mussels. The sauce is sweet and complex and a great change of pace from the usual escabeche (which is delish also). Probably our favorite mussels we’ve tried so far! Definitely get every last drop of the sauce with some crusty bread.

Incredibly unique tin. I was struck by gorgeous red color upon opening. The flavor is subtly sweet, but not cloyingly so. It reminds me of a tapa I had in barcelona years ago. The mussels are cooked to perfection and melt in the mouth. The seaweed and onions provide nice textural elements. The can liquid is almost a broth, sweet and piquant on it’s own: don’t let it go to waste!

I didn’t like these at all. Maybe I just have an unsophisticated palate, but they tasted almost rotten to me. The texture was very good, though.

Super delicious mussels in a perfect sauce. Served on some toasted focaccia and they hit the spot. I think I’ll just eat these all right out of the tin next time as I love the firm texture of tinned mussels.

Really unique and fun tin – I followed RTG’s lead and made some mashed potatoes with the sauce mixed in. Eating the mussels on top with some baby bok choy on the side was a perfect meal. Loved the kombu notes.

I loved eating these simply with toasted and buttered bread. The kombu and salsa brava added an interesting layer of flavor–savoury with a subtle sweetness–that complements the succulent mussels really well.

We had a tin party for my graduation, and this one was the standout/special treat by far! Like everything was good, but this was really interesting, the seaweed added a special extra element, and people fought to offer the last one to their special person. Will definitely buy again, even though they are on the pricier end of my range.

This was my first tin of mussels and is still my favorite. I love them on their own right out of the can. The sauce and vegetables make it a hearty little snack. The mussels themselves are clean and good textured.

This can is a new favorite of mine. I thought it was very delicious and fresh tasting. Perfect for a warm day with a cold glass of bubbles. Very flavorful with the salsa brava. I’d give it 5 stars, my husband thought it could have more salt so depending on your taste it could be a 4.5

This tin of mussels is one of my absolute favorite! I’m not a big fan of escabeche so I saw this flavor and took a shot. The oysters are tender, delicious… And the sauce! You cannot throw it away! Use it to cook your next breakfast with eggs!
