Occasionally you may crack open a tin of fish or shellfish and find something that looks beautiful, perfect – this is one of those tins. The mussels appear to have been handled with care, floating in an orange-tinged fragrant bath of olive oil infused with garlic and pepper. The flavor and texture are both nearly perfect – the olive oil is superior and the garlic and chili peppers overlay a nice light heat and depth of flavor atop the slight mineral note of the mussels. This is a luxurious tin worth adding to your must-try list.

Get those mini-toasts out and treat yourself. You’re going to want to get every bit of this oil, savor every bite of these mussels. The spice is a delicate 2 out of 5, just enough to notice and compliment all of the flavors. Texturally, it doesn’t get better than these mussels … no chewy bits, no grainy spots, they’re just perfect. The depth of flavor is brilliant, the oil is spectacular.

It’s the kind of tin that you’ll want to set aside time for, to sit down and savor. I rank these way up at the top alongside Güeyu Mar and Ramon Peña mussels. Put a flake of salt atop each bite and you’ll be transported immediately to a very happy place.

These were a gateway tin. I had canned mussels only once before, and I disliked that one so much that it steered me away for a while. I felt inspired by the other reviews to give these a try, and I’m glad I did. The plump mussels come swimming in oil tinted red by the chili, and the touch of mild heat and garlic make these so delightful that I ate them straight from the tin. They were firm and had a slight grainy texture that I find common in both canned mussels and oysters, and their flavor is more concentrated than their fresh counterpart.

I’ve since loaded up my cart with a variety of other mussels and I’m looking forward to discovering new favorites.
