Tender, rich, gently smokey, and perfectly seasoned, these Smoked Mackerel Filets meet and exceed everything I want from fish. They call to mind a subtler version of Korean broiled mackerel with their hint of smokiness and luxurious texture. Perhaps most important for some, they lack the overpowering or off flavors that less expertly prepared mackerel can have. Excellent on their own, but easily brightened with a bit of mustard, lemon, or hot sauce, these plump filets would be right at home atop bread, crackers, or rice with some fresh or pickled vegetables.

This was my first foray into tinned mackerel, so I don’t have have a strong frame of reference for the objective quality of the fish. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed this tin!

I’ve consumed a lot of other Ramon Pena (sardines, mussels, scallops, etc.) and I thought this tin exuded the same high standard that one would expect from the brand. Upon opening, there was a distinct “fishiness” that is different from tinned sardines, but a fishy aroma nonetheless. The flavor and texture were very pleasant; firm and meaty, but the fillets were able to taken in a lot of the oil (Ramon Pena uses only the good stuff!) so not dry at all. Also not too salty, and with detectable smokiness that did not overpower the flavor of the fish. The smokiness was definitely complimentary to the fish, and not as prominent or present as in some Baltic sprats or smoked Portuguese sardines that I have had.

Overall, I’m glad I tried this, and I think it has set a very high bar for any tins of mackerel that I will try in the future!

Teetering on this one. As expected, high quality fish & oil & presentation–but what about taste? Did the very firm fish absorb too much smoke? Too little? Co-tasters varied on these points, but there was a collective sense of something being off-balance. My feeling is that this was a bit too polite. Mackerel is oily & fishy; for its adherents, that’s part of the charm. I like mine to need a healthy splash of lemon & a hunk of bread, at the very least. But for others, this is a pleasingly luxurious delicacy. There’s only one way to find out. Open wide!

Much more tender and moist than most tinned mackerel I’ve had (both fillets and whole small), which I loved. The yielding texture would lend itself really well to being paired with rice, though I had them straight out of the tin and finished the whole thing in record time. The smokiness was elegant but definitely present, and the salt was nicely balanced. Probably my favorite smoked mackerel (without other added flavors) to date.
