I had really high hopes for these, Ramón Peña, after all. The aroma from the tin was wonderful. Visually, very nice plump mussels. Unfortunately, taste was rather chalky. Will try again, but so far not out performing lower priced tins.

Ramón Peña produces my favorite mussels overall and it’s not particularly close. This escabeche tin is no different. Brilliantly balanced with enough tangy depth to make for a great experience. I liked the size of the mussels here but the texture was a little different than I’m used to with RP. A touch softer, a tiny bit chalky. This is nitpicking, really, as it was still very *very* good (and worth this price). Yet, I’d rather save a few bucks and get the 16/20 escabeche or the 16/20 garlic chili tin … or treat myself to the more expensive RP gold line mussels in escabeche. My personal preference aside, you simply can’t go wrong with any of the Ramón Peña mussels.
