Ramón Peña Mussels in Escabeche 8/12, Silver Line

$11.00

Hand packed in the traditional fashion, mussels in escabeche is one of the staples in the world of conservas. Whether you whisk the tin liquid until it emulsifies into a sauce thick enough to coat the meats, fold the liquid into whipped potatoes and serve the meats atop tasting-spoons-ful, or eat them using the best potato chips you can find as the delivery vehicle, or just toothpick them out of the tin and eat them, there’s no wrong way to enjoy.

I had really high hopes for these, Ramón Peña, after all. The aroma from the tin was wonderful. Visually, very nice plump mussels. Unfortunately, taste was rather chalky. Will try again, but so far not out performing lower priced tins.

Ramón Peña produces my favorite mussels overall and it’s not particularly close. This escabeche tin is no different. Brilliantly balanced with enough tangy depth to make for a great experience. I liked the size of the mussels here but the texture was a little different than I’m used to with RP. A touch softer, a tiny bit chalky. This is nitpicking, really, as it was still very *very* good (and worth this price). Yet, I’d rather save a few bucks and get the 16/20 escabeche or the 16/20 garlic chili tin … or treat myself to the more expensive RP gold line mussels in escabeche. My personal preference aside, you simply can’t go wrong with any of the Ramón Peña mussels.

The first tin we really can’t recommend. H could only eat a single mussel as the taste was strong and off-putting to her. I muddled through but wasn’t impressed with the flavor or texture. As with all Peña products, the tin was packed beautifully. Make be it was just a bad tin, but in our opinion, there are better options for tinned mussels.
