Ramón Peña Mussels in Escabeche (Small) 16/20, Silver Line

$9.50

Hand packed in the traditional fashion, and beautifully displayed in the tin. There is no universal consensus on whether mussels are better smaller or larger, it’s a matter of personal (and to a certain degree, cultural) preference. The best way to find out which you prefer is to try some small ones alongside some large ones. No one can tell you what you like.

Perhaps I should rejigger my rankings, or perhaps I should just submit that Dan doesn’t off anything less than a 4 star tin. IDK. These are great, and edge out the low-end Espinalers for their consistency in size. Really lovely. More spendy than my daily drivers (Patagonia, on sale) but I’d stock up if I could get them at the same price (eg: $6.50/can).

Amazing. I have had some bad experiences with tinned mussels (mushy and sandy) but these have completely swayed my opinion and I am no longer weary! Not an overly vinegary pickled taste. Nice, firm mussels and enough to share with a friend. I loved them.

Unbelievable. Ramón Peña mussels are out of this world. The escabeche here is just as perfect as it is in the gold line tins – tangy, balanced, seasoned. The mussels are flawless, without any odd chewy bits, without any graininess. From start to finish, it’s a flawless tin … if you even *remotely* think that you enjoy mussels in escabeche, you owe it to yourself to enter the world of Ramón Peña to see just how amazing they can be. Buy this tin, buy the Ramón Peña spicy mussels with garlic and chili, buy the Ramón Peña gold line mussels in pickled sauce. They’re all just absolutely ridiculous in the best possible way.

This was a good tin of mussels. I would call these a little more than medium-firm. No grittiness at all, though I did detect the tiniest hint of dry/sandiness at times. The flavor of the mussels themselves is just about perfect. The sauce is pretty good. I enjoy tins in escabeche so I had pretty high hopes for this. The vinegar tang is very well balanced by the richness of the oil. If it were up to me, I’d push the seasoning on the sauce just a bit more. While eating these straight from the tin, I found myself thinking “I’d like this to be a bit saltier”. Easy to fix by plopping a delicious mussel onto the best, freshest potato chip you can find (this is what I did). Overall, an excellent tin.

This is my second tin of mussels ever and it was really really good! They were nice and firm but not chewy and absolutely no grit or gristle. The escabeche was well balanced and I took the time to emulsify it prior to eating, which I highly recommend. I will definitely be adding these to my regular rotation!

Wow. These are amazing. Perfectly packed into the tin. Each mussel was in great condition. Very clean, not a speck of sand. I ate them right out of the tin. They were about as wide as a quarter. The oil was pretty thin with a red tint. Not a complaint, but I’m not sure what “pickled” means to the producer. I didn’t get any vinegar flavor that I was expecting with that labeling. I really liked these and I think they are a good value. I’m glad I gave these a try.

Very, very nice mussels in an excellent escabeche. You don’t want to wolf these down. Savor them. These can stand up to a dash of the hot sauce of your choice, or maybe a piquant pepper. Or maybe kimchi & seaweed. Guess I’d better reorder.
