Very good flavor but was a bit disappointed as they were a bit on the mushy side; on the plus side they weren’t swimming in the oil like some others I’ve had. I would give them a 4.5 for a rating.

I have to agree with jfeyes.. I got these sardines expecting such high hopes, but they were honestly just okay. The meat itsself was a little mushy. The fish had scales (not inherently a bad thing, just surprising for Penas). I have tried quite a few brands, and these are just okay. For the price, maybe consider another product/line? (Nuri, Conservas de Cambados, Ferrigno La Bonne, etc.)

Huh. Not what I expected to get from a premium brand like Ramón Peña … surprisingly plain, mildly flavored, lightly seasoned, and with quite a few scales. They reminded me of Matiz sardines and I’d put them right at that level despite the higher price. Not an ideal straight-from-the-tin experience but, hey, still a good tin overall. If I end up trying this another time in the future, I’ll probably try to amp it up with some Tajin or something to give it more personality. Spend your Ramón Peña money on their mussels instead!

Ramon Pena is my go-to sardines for a special occasion, and these sardines are almost their “budget line”. Although great sardines, these fall way below the quality of their gold line, and personally I would much rather go for those. The texture of these sardines is great, but the flavor isn’t quite as “fishy”. This could be viewed as a good or bad thing.

Personally, I really enjoyed this tin, and it helped turn me around to enjoying larger sardines. I found the fish to have a firm and flaky texture. My favorite part was the noticeable crumble that the spines had. The flavor was mild, but it was still very tasty, complemented by the olive oil.
Perhaps it was just the variation in the fish, but I preferred these over the Nuri and Matiz tins that I’ve tried. If I’m looking for a nice tin of pilchards, I’ll probably buy these again.
