WARNING: Cancer and Reproductive Harm — www.P65Warnings.ca.gov/food

The terms “spiced” and “spicy” are used pretty much interchangeably in the tinned fish world, to mean two different things: with a hot pepper (or hot pepper flavor), and with cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper. There are many examples of both terms being used to mean both things.

We are so frustrated by how widespread this confusing inconsistent usage is that we’ve gone through our entire product line to correct the incorrect ones such that our description of “spiced” or “spicy” will always indicate which it really is, regardless of the packaging. “Spicy” = with hot pepper flavor. “Spiced” = with the cloves/bay/carrot/hot pepper flavors.

Absolutely delicious. My favorite thing out of my omakase order. The texture and flavor of the mussels is fantastic.

Garlic and chilli pepper is an all-star combo and such a recipe in the capable care of the folks Ramón Peña must be a winner, right? Definitely.

Cracking this tin open reveals two neatly arranged layers of mussels that appear to have been handled with care – they look pristine floating in their pool of reddish-orange oil.

The first bite leads with a bit of garlic and a quick hit of chilli pepper at the front of the tongue, followed by a bit of sweetness and earthiness from the flesh of the mussel, finishing with a tinge of heat at the back of the throat. Each subsequent bite builds the intensity of both the garlic and the chilli pepper – enough to satisfy an enthusiast, not enough to turn back a rookie, and definitely the right amount to win someone new to this combo over. The texture is great – not too firm, not too soft – just a great meaty bite, with some having a slightly creamy internal texture.

I enjoyed these straight from the tin and atop some sourdough toast. If I had a bit more self-control I would have stopped and prepared a bit of rice or noodles and enjoyed them mixed in with either, but I’ll just have to do that next time. These are a must-try on my list – go for it, you won’t regret it.

Really nice mussels, they were beautiful to look at and the oil was really nice on a salad topped with the mussels, easy spice that’s not too intense. I liked them best straight from the tin. They are up there with all of my favorite tinned mussels.

These are great. I didn’t find them particularly spicy, but there is a definite warmth and you can taste the garlic and pepper. They don’t need much and can be enjoyed straight from the tin, the quality of the mussels is excellent and you get plenty in the tin.

A fantastic lunch mussel, the flavor builds up as you go through the can. The garlic and spice complements, rather than overpowers, the mussels.

These were mind blowingly good. Life changing feels like an overreaction, but those are the words that come to mind thinking about this tin. Each mussel was PERFECT! My friend and I were joking that with each tin of mussels you always have to brace yourself for a few funky ones, and a funky one never came. The seasoning was not too overpowering but just right, the mussels were arranged beautifully in the tin and there were plenty of them in there. Easily the best tin of mussels I’ve had and most likely the best tin of anything I’ve ever had. Cannot recommend these enough!

One of the best tins of mussels I’ve ever had! Each mussel was a perfect texture without any extra-chewy bits that you’ll frequently find with mussels. The background flavors of garlic and chili were in perfect balance, and the heat (2 out of 5) was just enough to notice. I foolishly thought that I was going to want to eat these on some mini-toasts … but I was wrong. They need aaaabsolutely nothing else and were best all by themselves.

Compared to the (also-great) Don Gastronom mussels in spicy garlic sauce, these are (1) a little less spicy, (2) a little more flavorful, and (3) a few dollars more in price. Which should you buy? Both. But if you’re only buying one, get this Ramón Peña tin. It’s an all-time great tin of mussels that you’ll not regret trying.

Beautiful plump mussels packed tightly in the tin…they are perfect…looking like they were harvested yesterday…surrounded by a clean reddish oil.
The mussels are large, at better than one inch in length and there are 19 mussels in this tin…Nice!
The flavor is delicious. They are distinctly mussel yet spicy, with a faint hint of garlic in the back. The chew is just right, not mushy at all. The heat comes on slow and lingers. It is not a burning aggressive heat, but rather a deliciously spicy heat…I see by the RTG reviews that these are well liked, and I will be purchasing these again…again Delicious!

The best tin of mussels that I’ve ever had, bar none! I’ll preface by saying my tinned mussel experience is somewhat limited, I’ve had TJ (OK for the price) and Matiz (pretty good tin). Ramon Peña simply blew those out of the water. The mussels were beautifully packed with reddish oil. The texture was just perfect, each one was consistent without any “off putting” samples marring the experience. The garlic and chili complemented each other perfectly.
I thought I would have to put this tin on something else but wound up eating half the mussels straight from the tin, that’s how good they were. I placed the others on a warm bed of rice with chili crisp and it elevated them even further. I think I’ll include a tin of these with each RTG order, I would classify them as “affordable luxury” worthy of having periodically without putting a big strain on the wallet.

High quality mussels here. I agree with other reviewers that it sure seems like you get a good sized meal with the amount of mussels in the tin. I got a nice hit of heat tasting the oil on opening the tin. Once eating the mussels on potato chips though (trying this way for the first time), it was fairly subtle. Garlic is also subtle. There are no pieces of garlic or chillies in the tin, just mussels and oil, with a trace of broth in the bottom. The mussels themselves however are perfectly cooked and packaged, with excellent texture, neither too firm nor too soft. Enough salt present to be flavorful, but not noticeably salty. I think of these as a great alternative to plain oil packed mussels, rather than as a mussels with sauce/flavorings option.

O M G. I just got a big box of joy for an upcoming camping trip but couldn’t resist trying these on toasted homemade sourdough as I packed. They are FANTASTIC. Just the right amount of heat! Perfect texture. Amazing oil sauce. If I could order more for the trip asap I would. Can’t recommend highly enough!

These mussels were so soft they were almost buttery – a much better texture (in my opinion) than some of the other mussels I’ve tried in the past. They came very neatly arranged in a slightly overlapping almost “scale” patterns – like how a fish’s scales overlap each other. I was honestly surprised by how pristine they were because our packed was definitely jostled around quite a bit before we got around to it.

They were perfect paired with some salty potato chips and had a great balance of spice and umami. The spice was gentle – definitely flavorful, but mild enough that it would be manageable to someone with a lower spice tolerance. I will definitely be ordering them again in the future, and the quality was amazing for the price point. I haven’t tried Ramon Pena’s Gold Line mussels, but it’s hard to imagine them being much better than these.

We didn’t find these to really have any spice present. Relatively mild, soft and buttery in texture. Beautiful presentation upon opening the tin and we ate these with some toasted bread and crème friache.

Had these for lunch over a bowl of hot rice with furikake and wowza, this might be my favorite tin so far. I’ve had canned muscles before and they were almost chalky, not the buttery smooth of fresh muscles that i love. While these are definitely canned muscles, they’ve kept a surprisingly good texture and taste. Will be keeping these in the pantry.

these are fantastic. the texture is perfect, the sauce is beautiful with just the right amount of kick. a real treat.

I’d happily chow down on these at any occasion. Great balance of flavors, salty in just the way you want, pleasant slow build on the spice. Nice texture, good clean taste.
