    These squids are tender and coated in an inky sauce that highlights the sweet, briny flavor of the calamari so well. This was my first time eating tinned squids and the macabre discovery that the squid bodies were stuffed with their own heads momentarily gave me pause, but in the end I really loved the pure squid flavor and the texture of these.

    I ordered these because I have never tried tinned squid and was just curious. While they were fun and tasty, I probably won’t be ordering them again. My main concern was texture. These are nicely tender and not at all dry or tough like squid can sometimes be. The squid itself is fairly bland, but the sauce is the surprising highlight of the tin.

    The sauce ties the whole thing together. What is otherwise a meh but novel snack is made tasty. The way the squids’ tentacles stuffed inside the tubes gets coated and filled with sauce makes them the perfect vessel for it. I would suggest opening the tubes slightly to make sure they fill with sauce before eating.

    I usually eat fish straight out of the tin, on crackers, or on a baguette. I recommend a baguette here or a larger slice of a crusty bread. The tin contains 8 medium size pieces, each slightly too big for the bread I was using.

    I had this tin as part of a fishmas seacuterie spread with family, including several newbies. My sister’s kid loooves squid but hadn’t tried it tinned before; this was by far one of their favorite tins on the spread. Everyone loved the ink sauce; that was definitely my favorite part. The squid itself I’m not a big fan of personally, but it was definitely good quality squid. If I get this tin again I would love to toss it with some pasta. Felt kinda brutal thinking about the idea of it being stuffed with itself, but it does allow the ink to really soak in/around everything. For myself, I think I’d prefer squid chunks, but it’s not like I couldn’t just chop the squid myself (which is what I’d do for pasta). Anyways if you’ve never had squid before, this is a very intimidating tin to start with. But if you already love squid, you’ll love this tin.
