I had this Herring with a slice of toasted Cibata and Caper. The sauce was excellent. The next time I will try this on whole wheat. toast. This is another tin that I highly recommend.

I bought two tins of these because I cannot find any pickled herring in my area, and miss the German pickled herring salad over potatoes dearly. If you are expecting pickled herring, this definitely is not that, but it is still very good! I found that the sauce was on the sweeter side, and needed a heavy hit of both acidity and salt for my taste. The only herbs I tasted in the sauce was dill, which was what I was hoping for. The herring was very tender and flaked easily, and I could see myself eating this on bread with some pickled onions, lettuce, and ground pepper in a pinch. Overall, my second favorite of the Rügen herring I’ve tried! Very excellent quality for the price.
To the sauce, I added lemon juice, shallots, a good hit of citrus garlic pepper, and parsley. I mixed everything together with some boiled new potatoes. I’ll definitely be trying this again in the fall with some sour apples.

This tin definitely caught me a bit off guard, as I usually go for oil based tins. The sauce was very creamy and rich, and had good flavor. That being said, this is likely a good “starter tin” or for those who don’t usually like super seafood or fishy tasting tins. I prefer the fishy taste, so probably would opt for a different tin in the future. I paired this with a good toasted bread and it was great because the sauce was really able to soak into the bread.
