I had this Herring with a slice of toasted Cibata and Caper. The sauce was excellent. The next time I will try this on whole wheat. toast. This is another tin that I highly recommend.

I bought two tins of these because I cannot find any pickled herring in my area, and miss the German pickled herring salad over potatoes dearly. If you are expecting pickled herring, this definitely is not that, but it is still very good! I found that the sauce was on the sweeter side, and needed a heavy hit of both acidity and salt for my taste. The only herbs I tasted in the sauce was dill, which was what I was hoping for. The herring was very tender and flaked easily, and I could see myself eating this on bread with some pickled onions, lettuce, and ground pepper in a pinch. Overall, my second favorite of the Rügen herring I’ve tried! Very excellent quality for the price.

To the sauce, I added lemon juice, shallots, a good hit of citrus garlic pepper, and parsley. I mixed everything together with some boiled new potatoes. I’ll definitely be trying this again in the fall with some sour apples.

This tin definitely caught me a bit off guard, as I usually go for oil based tins. The sauce was very creamy and rich, and had good flavor. That being said, this is likely a good “starter tin” or for those who don’t usually like super seafood or fishy tasting tins. I prefer the fishy taste, so probably would opt for a different tin in the future. I paired this with a good toasted bread and it was great because the sauce was really able to soak into the bread.

So, so delicious and easy to eat. Mild in flavor but still very much worthwhile. Adding just a little bit of salt and pepper took this to a really wonderful place. The dill isn’t terribly strong but is a nice little background note. The fillets themselves were soft and flaky just as you’d expect if you’ve had any other of the Rügen Fisch herring tins. I like to eat all of the Rügenherring tins straight from the tin but this would perhaps shine even more on some toasty bread. Time after time, this brand provides great value on some great herring.

This was my first time having tinned herring and it was really nice! There’s plenty of sauce, and it’s got a very good flavor and balance. The herring was firm but tender and there was enough that I ended up saving a bit to have as a snack later in the day. I wasn’t sure if it might have bones or not since I’m new to herring filets, my tin was definitely boneless. A very solid, mild/accessible tin.
