Rügen Fisch Herring Fillets in White Wine Sauce

$4.00

Dan used to travel for business to Germany (Munich and Düsseldorf) on a regular basis and the things he misses the most are the beer (of course), one spectacular herring sandwich from a street vendor, and the vast array of thoroughly delicious and surprisingly inexpensive Rügen Fisch products available at every supermarket and bodega.

Not just white wine, the sauce in this tin has a bit dairy along with powdered vegetables and herbs.

THIS is my favorite Rügen Fisch product I’ve ordered so far. After trying some of the other RF tins, I was astounded by how much I liked this one. The fish is, gorgeous? Just perfect flat filets that I was able to lift out and perch intact on top of crispy potatoes. I loved how much the sauce tastes distinctly of decent white wine. This tin tastes bright & clear, very very mildly acidic and sweet. The closest tin in flavor & texture to classic pickled herring I’ve tried. My partner commented that without context, they wouldn’t have guessed that this fish came out of a can, & I agree. Will re-buy this tin ’til the end of time if possible. We ate this tin over the aforementioned crispy potatoes, with stewed cabbage/mushroom, and a carrot/celery heart slaw with a little garlicky mayonnaise.

This wasn’t my favorite tin. The sauce, to me, did not carry much flavor – maybe I had an off tin. Instead of acidic and bright, it was a bit sour. The fish itself was fair, the texture was a bit flakey, but I was unconvinced by the sauce.
