I don’t say this easily or lightly … these are very, VERY close to the Nuri spiced tomato tin (which is my favorite tomato’d sardine of all time). I am stunned at how close they are to that gold standard. Sardinha’s tomato was excellent – ideal thickness, not too sweet, definitely not tomato paste or ketchup. The spicy level was maybe even slightly more than the Nuri spiced, I’d perhaps put this tin at 2.5 out of 5? Had a biiiig ol’ pepper in the bottom of the tin. I did want just a tiny bit of extra salt as I ate this (at room temp) but I imagine most people won’t feel like it needs a thing.
The biggest difference here between Sardinha and Nuri was texture. If you’re put off by Nuri’s softy-soft tomato sardine texture but you still want that deeply flavored and spicy tomato sauce, look no further. The texture here was a 3 out of 5 medium and moisture hit 3 of 5 as well. It may not have soaked up as much sauce as Nuri but wow, I don’t care. I am impressed, Sardinha. Absolutely buy this if you even *remotely* think that you like sardines in tomato sauce.

I am new to the sardines game, but these were very tasty! This was my first experience with sardines in tomato sauce, so I don’t have a lot of pure comparisons to make. Compared to Nuri Spiced Sardines in Olive Oil these, were a little spicier, but still mild, slightly softer in texture to the Nuri’s and a little bit “fishier.”
I don’t think this will be in the regular rotation for me, but a very solid tin!
