Where the Chinese eel is dry, this eel is soft and luscious. And a bit more expensive.
Where the Gulf of Maine eel is impeccable and perfect, this eel is cut into smaller pieces which shift around a bit in the tin. And a lot less expensive.
Unagi sauce is similar to teriyaki, but sweeter. We think this version is a lot thinner than you might expect if you were thinking of the sauce that goes on your eel at a sushi restaurant.

The question we all are *immediately* asking is, is this like the unagi that I love to get at a sushi restaurant?!? I’m happy to answer … yeah, mostly it is! Right out of the tin, the flavor profile of the eel is extremely similar to that you get in sushi. The texture is soft and the mouthfeel is decadent + fatty. The sauce is extremely, extremely thin and reads more like they put a splash of Japanese BBQ sauce into the oil. Despite not having the thickness to stick much to the pieces, it does still hit the same flavor notes as eel sauce.
It’s nothing like the Old Fisherman eel texture, that’s for sure. I ate this at room temp out of the tin and simply put, I loved it. Next time -and for SURE there’ll be a next time- I’ll put it in a pan first to crisp it up. I can’t wait to try it seared because I fully expect it to be mind-blowing in that preparation. It’s one of the best treat-yourself tins I’ve ever had and it’s a real unagi lover’s dream come true.
